Test developed to detect early-stage diseases with naked eye: Prototype ultra sensitive disease sensor developed

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have developed a prototype ultra-sensitive sensor that would enable doctors to detect the early stages of diseases and viruses with the naked eye, according to research published?October 28 in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

The team, from Imperial College London, report that their visual sensor technology is ten times more sensitive than the current gold standard methods for measuring biomarkers. These indicate the onset of diseases such as prostate cancer and infection by viruses including HIV.

The researchers say their sensor would benefit countries where sophisticated detection equipment is scarce, enabling cheaper and simpler detection and treatments for patients.

In the study, the team tested the effectiveness of the sensor by detecting a biomarker called p24 in blood samples, which indicates HIV infection.

Professor Molly Stevens, from the Departments of Materials and Bioengineering at Imperial College London, says: "It is vital that patients get periodically tested in order to assess the success of retroviral therapies and check for new cases of infection. Unfortunately, the existing gold standard detection methods can be too expensive to be implemented in parts of the world where resources are scarce. Our approach affords for improved sensitivity, does not require sophisticated instrumentation and it is ten times cheaper, which could allow more tests to be performed for better screening of many diseases."

The researchers in this study also tested samples for the biomarker called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), which is an early indicator for Prostate Cancer. The team say the sensor can also be reconfigured for other viruses and diseases where the specific biomarker is known.

The sensor works by analysing serum, derived from blood, in a disposable container. If the result is positive for p24 or PSA, there is a reaction that generates irregular clumps of nanoparticles, which give off a distinctive blue hue in a solution inside the container. If the results are negative the nanoparticles separate into ball-like shapes, creating a reddish hue. Both reactions can be easily seen by the naked eye.

The team also report that the sensor was so sensitive that it was able to detect minute levels of p24 in samples where patients had low viral loads, which could not be diagnosed using existing tests such as the Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) test and the gold standard nucleic acid based test.

Dr Roberto de la Rica, co-author of the study from the Department of Materials at Imperial College London, adds: "We have developed a test that we hope will enable previously undetectable HIV infections and indicators of cancer to be picked up, which would mean people could be treated sooner. We also believe that this test could be significantly cheaper to administer, which could pave the way for more widespread use of HIV testing in poorer parts of the world."

The next stage of the research will see the team approaching not-for-profit global health organisations, which could provide strategic direction and funding for manufacturing and distributing the sensor to low income countries.

2,000 sheep led through streets of Spain's capital

MADRID (AP) -- Spanish shepherds led a flock of more than 2,000 sheep through central Madrid on Sunday in defense of ancient grazing, migration and droving rights threatened by urban sprawl and modern agricultural practices.

Many tourists and residents were surprised to see traffic cut to allow the ovine parade to bleat its way across some of Madrid's most upscale urban streets.

The right to use droving routes that wind across land that was open fields and woodland before Madrid grew from a rural hamlet to the great metropolis it is today has existed since at least 1273.

Every year, a handful of shepherds defend the right and, following an age-old tradition, on Sunday paid 25 maravedis ? coins first minted in the 11th century ? to city hall to use the crossing.

Shepherds have a right to use 78,000 miles (125,000 kilometers) of paths for seasonal livestock migrations from cool highland pastures in summer to warmer and more protected lowland grazing in winter.

The movement is called transhumance and in Spain up until recently involved close to a million animals a year, mostly sheep and cattle.

Modern farming practices are however increasingly confining animals to barns, because shepherding is costly, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, which has been promoting the colorful annual Transhumance Fiesta in Madrid since 1994.

Madrid became an important urban center when King Philip II chose it as the capital of his vast empire in 1561. Some paths have been used for more than 800 years and modern-day Madrid has sprawled to engulf two north-south routes. One that crosses Puerta del Sol ? Madrid's equivalent of New York's Times Square ? dates back to 1372.

Spaniards are proud of their centuries-old sheep rearing traditions and hold the native Merino breed of sheep in particular esteem. Merinos have gone on to form the backbone of important wool industries in places such as Australia and South America.

New study brings a doubted exoplanet 'back from the dead'

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? A second look at data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is reanimating the claim that the nearby star Fomalhaut hosts a massive exoplanet. The study suggests that the planet, named Fomalhaut b, is a rare and possibly unique object that is completely shrouded by dust.

Fomalhaut is the brightest star in the constellation Piscis Austrinus and lies 25 light-years away.

In November 2008, Hubble astronomers announced the exoplanet, named Fomalhaut b, as the first one ever directly imaged in visible light around another star. The object was imaged just inside a vast ring of debris surrounding but offset from the host star. The planet's location and mass -- no more than three times Jupiter's -- seemed just right for its gravity to explain the ring's appearance.

Recent studies have claimed that this planetary interpretation is incorrect. Based on the object's apparent motion and the lack of an infrared detection by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, they argue that the object is a short-lived dust cloud unrelated to any planet.

A new analysis, however, brings the planet conclusion back to life.

"Although our results seriously challenge the original discovery paper, they do so in a way that actually makes the object's interpretation much cleaner and leaves intact the core conclusion, that Fomalhaut b is indeed a massive planet," said Thayne Currie, an astronomer formerly at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and now at the University of Toronto.

The discovery study reported that Fomalhaut b's brightness varied by about a factor of two and cited this as evidence that the planet was accreting gas. Follow-up studies then interpreted this variability as evidence that the object actually was a transient dust cloud instead.

In the new study, Currie and his team reanalyzed Hubble observations of the star from 2004 and 2006. They easily recovered the planet in observations taken at visible wavelengths near 600 and 800 nanometers, and made a new detection in violet light near 400 nanometers. In contrast to the earlier research, the team found that the planet remained at constant brightness.

The team attempted to detect Fomalhaut b in the infrared using the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii, but was unable to do so. The non-detections with Subaru and Spitzer imply that Fomalhaut b must have less than twice the mass of Jupiter.

Another contentious issue has been the object's orbit. If Fomalhaut b is responsible for the ring's offset and sharp interior edge, then it must follow an orbit aligned with the ring and must now be moving at its slowest speed. The speed implied by the original study appeared to be too fast. Additionally, some researchers argued that Fomalhaut b follows a tilted orbit that passes through the ring plane.

Using the Hubble data, Currie's team established that Fomalhaut b is moving with a speed and direction consistent with the original idea that the planet's gravity is modifying the ring.

"What we've seen from our analysis is that the object's minimum distance from the disk has hardly changed at all in two years, which is a good sign that it's in a nice ring-sculpting orbit," explained Timothy Rodigas, a graduate student in the University of Arizona and a member of the team.

Currie's team also addressed studies that interpret Fomalhaut b as a compact dust cloud not gravitationally bound to a planet. Near Fomalhaut's ring, orbital dynamics would spread out or completely dissipate such a cloud in as little as 60,000 years. The dust grains experience additional forces, which operate on much faster timescales, as they interact with the star's light.

"Given what we know about the behavior of dust and the environment where the planet is located, we think that we're seeing a planetary object that is completely embedded in dust rather than a free-floating dust cloud," said team member John Debes, an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md.

A paper describing the findings has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Because astronomers detect Fomalhaut b by the light of surrounding dust and not by light or heat emitted by its atmosphere, it no longer ranks as a "directly imaged exoplanet." But because it's the right mass and in the right place to sculpt the ring, Currie's team thinks it should be considered a "planet identified from direct imaging."

Fomalhaut was targeted with Hubble most recently in May by another team. Those observations are currently under scientific analysis and are expected to be published soon.

First Time Buyers - Zillow Real Estate Advice

To user 0985550 - there are many different types of loans available.? Some are based on the geographic area you are buying in (such as a USDA rural loan), some? on how much money you have saved for a downpayment (an FHA loan requires less money down then a conventional loan), some on the type of home you are purchasing and whether it will need work or not (a rehab loan may be your best bet if you are buying a fixer-upper) or if you are buying a foreclosure, the bank or governmental agency that is selling it may have some special loans available to you. If you are a veteran, you should use a VA loan. You may also be eligible for local state and county financing.

Where to start?? Typically I recommend finding a good LOCAL mortgage lender. A bank or credit union will typically only loan their own money and will have a more limited portfolio of loans available. A mortgage banker broker will be able to loan money from the bank that he works for AND he will be able to shop the other lenders to see if one has a better program for you then he has. A mortgage broker doesn't lend his own banks money, but he shops banks and other lending institutions for a loan for you.? If you expect to be using any first time homebuyer grant monies, then you will need to check with the agency handling those funds since only certain lenders are typically authorized to issue them.

How to find a good LOCAL lender - you may want to start by talking to friends who have purchased a home recently, or your bank or credit union. An excellent source for a referral to a good lender is your Realtor.? They will want you to use a local reputable lender since they know that will get you to a much smoother closing.

A good lender will give you alternatives - he or she will go over the programs that you are eligible for and will help you to determine which program is the best fit for your needs.? He'll discuss with you if a 15 or 20 or 30 yr loan would be your best alternative based on how long you intend to be in the home and how you expect your income to change over that time.

One thing I always recommend is that you ask the lender to run the numbers 2 ways - the standard way is how much buying power do I have based on my credit rating, debt to income ratio and overall financial picture. That way you know how much you can afford if the right home pops up. I typically do not recommend that anyone buy at the top of their price point - people who do have a tendency to be house poor.? When all your money is going toward your house payments and you don't have money to go out to eat or to a movie or to socialize with friends, you will end up hating your home.? As a result, I tell buyers to ask their lender to run the numbers a second way - tell the lender how much you want to spend each month on your house payments and ask them to run the numbers in reverse and tell you what price point of a home you should be looking at.

Good luck

84 million stars in amazing galaxy photo

Astronomers have cataloged 84 million stars at the heart of the Milky Way galaxy using an enormous cosmic photo snapped by a telescope in Chile, a view that is billed as the largest survey ever of the stars in our galaxy's core.

The staggering 9-gigapixel picture was created with data gathered by the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA), an instrument at the European Southern Observatory's Paranal Observatory in northern Chile. The zoomable image is so large that it would measure 30 feet long by 23 feet tall (9 by 7 meters) if printed with the resolution of a typical book, researchers said.

The catalog derived from the new image contains 10 times more stars than previous studies have provided. It should help astronomers better understand the structure and evolution of our home galaxy, researchers said.

"By observing in detail the myriads of stars surrounding the center of the Milky Way we can learn a lot more about the formation and evolution of not only our galaxy, but also spiral galaxies in general," study lead author Roberto Saito of the Pontificia Universidad Cat?lica de Chile, Universidad de Valpara?so and The Milky Way Millennium Nucleus, said in a statement. [Stunning Photos of Our Milky Way Galaxy]

The huge new picture probes the Milky Way's central bulge, a concentration of ancient stars found near the core of most spiral galaxies. Getting good looks at this region is not an easy task.

"Observations of the bulge of the Milky Way are very hard because it is obscured by dust," said co-author Dante Minniti, also of Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile. "To peer into the heart of the galaxy, we need to observe in infrared light, which is less affected by the dust."

VISTA was able to do just that, snapping thousands of infrared images that were combined to generate a monumental color mosaic measuring 108,200 by 81,500 pixels. It's one of the biggest astronomical images ever produced, researchers said.

Astronomers identified 173 million different objects in the 9 billion-pixel image, of which 84 million could be confirmed as stars. The rest were distant objects such as galaxies, or they were too faint or blended to be identified conclusively.

Saito and his team then plotted the brightness of each star against its color, creating a color-magnitude diagram with 84 million data points. These diagrams are valuable tools, helping astronomers study star properties such as temperature, mass and age.

"Each star occupies a particular spot in this diagram at any moment during its lifetime," Minniti said. "Where it falls depends on how bright it is and how hot it is. Since the new data gives us a snapshot of all the stars in one go, we can now make a census of all the stars in this part of the Milky Way."

The astronomers are making their data publicly available so other research teams can use it to make exciting finds of their own.

The team published their results in the August issue of the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Will Windows 8 crack the surface?

19 hrs.

Firm sales numbers for Microsoft's Windows 8 and its new Surface tablet will not be available for three months, but it may be clear long before then if it has a hit on its hands.

"We can definitely gauge it by chatter," said Emily Chan, an analyst at Bernstein Research. "There is a slight learning curve, so I don't think we will see that big pop that iPad saw."

Microsoft is desperate for the new-look, touch-friendly Windows 8 to grip customers' imaginations, as it looks to regain ground lost to Apple and Google in mobile computing and shake up the moribund PC market.

Perhaps more important is its new own-brand tablet called the Surface, available only through its own stores and website, which will challenge Apple's iPad head on.

"I'd want to know the sales???and return rate???of the Surface," said Sarah Rotman Epps at tech research firm Forrester. "But those numbers will be hard to get since Microsoft is the only retailer."

Early reviews of the Surface have been mixed, generally praising the slick hardware, but faulting battery life and the limited software and applications available.

Some worry that the first Surface model, which runs on a stripped-down version of Windows 8 called RT that is not compatible with old Windows programs, will cause some confusion and dissatisfaction among customers.

The three models for sale on Microsoft's U.S. website are already on back order, suggesting strong demand, but it is not known how many Surfaces Microsoft has manufactured.

"The fact it's back ordered is indicative that there's consumer interest," said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at tech research firm Gartner. "How Microsoft introduces it, evangelizes it and explains it will determine long term success."

Microsoft has not said if it will reveal sales figures for Windows 8 or of the Surface before its next scheduled earnings on Jan.?24. The company tends to trumpet good news and stay silent otherwise.

After the launch of Windows 7 three years ago, CEO Steve Ballmer waited only a month to announce strong sales. A year later, he waited only 10 days to report record-breaking sales of the Kinect, the motion-sensing add-on for the Xbox. But Microsoft has never shared the sales of Windows-powered phones, which have a lowly 3 percent of the market.

If Ballmer stays silent about Windows 8 sales, it might indicate a less than stellar performance.

"I would definitely take it a sign that it's not super, super strong, but I won't take it as something negative," said Chan at Bernstein, who is expecting 8.3 million Surface sales by the middle of next year.

That averages out at about 1 million a month, a third the rate of the iPad, which notched up its first million sales in 28 days and has now sold more than 100 million units, averaging about 3.2 million a month.

Gartner forecasts that Surface and other tablets running Windows RT will sell about 2.3 million units this year and 9.3 million next year, grabbing about 2 percent and 5 percent of the worldwide tablet market, respectively.

Door-busters

Retail activity will be closely watched. Microsoft will have more than 60 brick and mortar stores open for the release of Windows 8 on Friday, half of them 'pop-up' stores that will stay open for the holiday shopping season.

Third-party retailers are cautiously optimistic.

"We have seen pretty good response to our pre-orders for Windows 8," said Best Buy spokesman Jeff Haydock. "Quite honestly, I don't know what to expect from Friday. I don't know if there will be lines or not. My sense is it will take some time for people to kind of come into the stores and check it out."

Best Buy may give some color on how PC sales are going when it reports earnings on Nov. 20.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the No. 1 U.S. retailer, said U.S. pre-orders for Windows 8 PCs "have been better than expected."

Online retailers Amazon.com Inc, Newegg and TigerDirect have been silent on Windows 8 pre-orders.

The full impact of PC sales on retailers will not be evident until chains report same-store sales for November.

Quick reaction

One early indicator of Windows 8's success will be the contents of the online Windows Store. Microsoft has had a harder time drumming up interest among developers for Windows 8, given the risk that there will be fewer users than competing platforms.

Microsoft will not disclose numbers, but there are expected to be 5,000 or so third-party apps available to U.S. users, in comparison with the iPad's 275,000. Some big names such as Facebook will be missing.

In social media, the tenor of comments on the Twitter hashtags #Windows8 and #Surface will give an indication of their reception after Ballmer unveils them both on Thursday.

Many users likely will be shocked by the new design, which dispenses with the Start button and features square tiles for apps.

"Public reaction to the new UI will depend how well Microsoft explains why 'different' is better and teaches how the new experience works," said Gartenberg. "That all starts on Thursday."

By the numbers

The ultimate test for Windows 8 will be PC sales.

Industry trackers are expecting a bump for PC sales in the last two months of the year, but not enough to rescue the whole year, which is forecast to dip for the first time since 2001.

Some analysts had expected an uptick in production of laptops ahead of the Windows 8 launch, but PC makers facing an uncertain global economy have been wary about committing.

Chip maker Intel, which is a good gauge of future PC demand due to its position early in the production process, expects the PC business to grow at only half the normal seasonal rate in the fourth quarter.

Chief Executive Paul Otellini recently told analysts he expects to have a better understanding of the success of Windows 8 in 90 days.

Stephen Baker, an analyst at retail research firm NPD Group, is expecting a 10 percent jump in PC sales for November and December over last year, but said comparisons will be difficult given a profusion of new devices and the volatility of year-ago data.

Fourth-quarter PC shipment numbers from research firms Gartner and IDC will not be published until early January, although analysts say PC makers might start to drop hints about demand before then.

"There will likely be many milestones, but very few will ultimately be decisive. The key point is will PC sales continue to shrink or will they experience a boost," said Al Hilwa at research firm IDC. "We can probably begin to properly judge that with some ambiguity in January."

Living power cables discovered: Multicellular bacteria transmit electrons across relatively great distances

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? A multinational research team has discovered filamentous bacteria that function as living power cables in order to transmit electrons thousands of cell lengths away.

The Desulfobulbus bacterial cells, which are only a few thousandths of a millimeter long each, are so tiny that they are invisible to the naked eye. And yet, under the right circumstances, they form a multicellular filament that can transmit electrons across a distance as large as 1 centimeter as part of the filament's respiration and ingestion processes.

The discovery by scientists at Aarhus University in Denmark and USC will be published in Nature on October 24.

"To move electrons over these enormous distances in an entirely biological system would have been thought impossible," said Moh El-Naggar, assistant professor of physics at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and co-author of the Nature paper.

Aarhus scientists had discovered a seemingly inexplicable electric current on the sea floor years ago. The new experiments revealed that these currents are mediated by a hitherto unknown type of long, multicellular bacteria that act as living power cables

"Until we found the cables we imagined something cooperative where electrons were transported through external networks between different bacteria. It was indeed a surprise to realize, that it was all going on inside a single organism," said Lars Peter Nielsen of the Aarhus Department of Bioscience, and a corresponding author of the Nature paper.

The team studied bacteria living in marine sediments that power themselves by oxidizing hydrogen sulfide. Cells at the bottom live in a zone that is poor in oxygen but rich in hydrogen sulfide, and those at the top live in an area rich in oxygen but poor in hydrogen sulfide.

The solution? They form long chains that transport individual electrons from the bottom to the top, completing the chemical reaction and generating life-sustaining energy.

"You have feeder cells on one end and breather cells on the other, allowing the whole living cable to survive," El-Naggar said.

Aarhus and USC researchers collaborated to use physical techniques to evaluate the long-distance electron transfer in the filamentous bacteria. El-Naggar and his colleagues had previously used scanning-probe microscopy and nanofabrication methods to describe how bacteria use nanoscale structures called "bacterial nanowires" to transmit electrons many body lengths away from cells.

"I'm a physicist, so when I look at remarkable phenomena like this, I like to put it into a quantifiable process," El-Naggar said.

El-Naggar, who was just chosen as one of the Popular Science Brilliant 10 young scientists for his work in biological physics, said physicists are increasingly being tapped to tackle tough biological questions.

"This world is so fertile right now," he said. "It's just exploding."

Al-Qaida in Yemen regrouping in 'sleeper cells'

ADEN (Reuters) - A U.S.-backed military onslaught may have driven Islamist militants from towns in Yemen they seized last year, but many have regrouped into "sleeper cells" threatening anew the areas they vacated, security officials and analysts say.

The resilience of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), despite increased U.S. drone strikes to eliminate militants, is worrying for top oil exporter Saudi Arabia next door and the security of major shipping lanes in the seas off Yemen.

When a nationwide uprising against autocratic rule erupted last year, tying up security forces and causing a power vacuum, militants charged into the major south Yemen towns of Zinjibar, Jaar and Shuqra and set up Islamic "emirates".

To broad their appeal, the militants renamed themselves Ansar al-Sharia (Partisans of Islamic Law), appointed spokesmen to deal with the media and put up signposts and flags. Poverty, unemployment and alienation from a central government seen as aloof and corrupt spurred some young men to join the cause.

Residents said the militants included Saudis, Pakistanis, Egyptians, Chechens and Somalis, hinting at the international scope of the jihadi threat to Saudi and Western interests.

After President Ali Abdullah Saleh finally bowed to popular revolt and stepped down in February, the U.S.-backed Yemeni military swept in and wrested back southern towns from the militants, sometimes after heavy fighting.

But the south, where resentment of tribal domination from the north has long run high and a separatist movement revived in 2007, has since become a more dangerous place, residents say.

STEALTHY SHIFT IN TACTICS

"After their sudden withdrawal from Abyan, it ended with no one victorious or defeated," said Aden-based commentator Madyan al-Maqbas. "They had suddenly come, they took over, then they fled to the hills, and they left behind sleeper cells."

A rash of deadly violence in the major southern province of Abyan ensued, indicating that Ansar militants were still lurking in the vicinity of the towns they had once controlled.

Nine jihadis including the head of the Jaar "emirate" Nader al-Shaddadi were killed by a U.S. drone missile fired into a farmhouse where they were hiding just outside town on October 19.

Five of the militants were teenagers from Jaar itself who had quietly moved into the farmhouse as a typical sleeper cell, a Yemeni security source told Reuters.

The next day, militants ambushed an army base in Shuqra, killing 16 soldiers, after apparently slipping out of lairs in the barren rugged mountains rearing up above the town.

"Most people are concerned about sleeper cells. We're aware of it and people have started to be more careful," said Hasan Ali Hasan, 35, from the Mansoura district of Aden where security forces raided some suspected "safe houses" this month.

In June, the commander of the army's southern division, a southerner who replaced a Saleh ally from north Yemen in March, was killed by a car bomb in a suburb of Aden, the sprawling main city and port in the south. Security forces subsequently uncovered numerous caches of suicide belts in the area.

There have been dozens of other attacks and kidnappings by undercover militants targeting security and military officials.

Yemeni security sources said the two leading figures in Ansar al-Sharia, Nader al-Shaddadi and Galal Bil-Eidy, are believed to be sheltering in mountains around Shuqra where they form the link between urban cells in Aden and AQAP commanders like Nasser al-Wuhayshi tucked away in mountains to the north.

They said such regional militant chieftains had activated sleeper cells to carry out assassinations of security officials in Aden and attacks like the one in Shuqra.

AL QAEDA IN THE ARABIAN PENINSULA

Formed in 2009, AQAP has carved out a reputation as al Qaeda's most formidable regional wing with suicide attacks on tourists, diplomats and operations against neighboring Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter, and U.S. targets abroad.

The sudden spread of al Qaeda in south Yemen was seen by many Yemenis as a ruse by Saleh, a northerner, to warn Western and regional backers of what would happen if their trusted strongman was no longer around to keep militancy in check.

Interim President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi has begun replacing military and security chiefs in the south with southerners less connected to Saleh. The new command has been welcomed in Aden as more serious about challenging AQAP.

But the new commanders must still rely on tribal militias called "popular committees" inside southern towns and surrounding districts to stop militants returning in force.

Residents fear some militants could have infiltrated the committees, noting that the Ansar al-Sharia "emirate" in Jaar managed to negotiate a deal with the military that allowed many gunmen to leave unscathed.

Mohammed Sukain al-Jaadani, former head of a popular committee in Shuqra that helped organize tribes against the militants last year, is now trying to dissuade the region's youth from being tempted by jihadist ideology.

"After Jaar and Zinjibar, al Qaeda turned into sleeper cells. It's a danger for society, they are in many places. They threaten tribes and citizens," said Jaadani.

He has set up a Tribal Social Alliance in his home region in Hadramaut province bordering Saudi Arabia.

"We did good work with tribes, and we are still doing work to save our regions from al Qaeda and unknown people to reject destructive, terrorist ideas. They created a culture of violence and extremism. We're trying to help the authorities come back."

Jaadani recalled suspicious behavior by Saleh's forces last year, including three incidents when fighter jets targeted his tribal force rather than militant positions. He said 30 were killed in that one attack, which the army said was a mistake.

"Al Qaeda was in all areas of Shuqra. But we cleaned them out and had a plan to bring a complete end to 'Ansar al-Sharia' here," Jaadani said. "But some officials in the state cut off supplies to us and we withdrew because of that.

"The former regime neglected its duty. When Saleh was still there, they didn't want tribes to succeed ... When we withdrew (last year), al Qaeda came back and took over Al-Kod and Shuqra, as if it was prearranged by the authorities."

MOUNTAIN REDOUBTS

Nasser al-Noba, a former army officer who helped relaunch the southern separatist movement, says militants have hunkered down in the Mahfad, Marakisha and Hatat mountains, inland from the flat coastal areas of Jaar, Zinjibar and Shuqra.

But they face an increasing risk of death from drones if they emerge, he said.

"They sometimes appear in the streets, they suddenly appear and disappear as if by remote control. They go around in landcruisers, with the stickers of al Qaeda on the doors. But since Saleh's fall, the drones have started to have an effect."

Drones have featured prominently in the Sanaa government's security strategy since Hadi took charge. Residents of towns once held by al Qaeda say many buildings were targeting during the campaign this year to evict the Islamists.

Some southern tribal figures have adopted the jihadi banner. One of them was U.S.-born Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed along with his son by a U.S. drone in 2011, and Tarek al-Fadli, who was raised in Saudi Arabia and fought in Afghanistan.

Whatever the causes of al Qaeda's spread, and the brief public life of Ansar al-Sharia, analysts say the phenomenon of militancy would recede with a stronger, more efficient state presence and economic development creating jobs.

Despite AQAP's resourcefulness in south Yemen, Mohammed Qahtan of the Islamist Islah party in Sanaa is confident that al Qaeda, which killed 100 soldiers in a suicide attack on a Sanaa military parade in May, was now feeling more heat.

"Al Qaeda has been weakened since Hadi took over. The presence of the state in politics, development and security - filling the gaps the state had created - will tip the scales and change people's attitude towards al Qaeda."

On Iranian Sanctions And Chinese Energy Needs

US reliance on oil imports as a share of consumption is gradually declining; but China's, however, is rising and is now higher than the US. As JPMorgan's Michael Cembalest notes, China now has the world's largest new car market and most extensive network of superhighways - which given the lack of a viable, affordable electric car - means fossil fuel consumption is expected to continue to rise. The trends that lead to this inexorable rise have critically important implications for the West in the ongoing containment of Iran's nuclear ambitions. Unfortunately for the West, the prospects for cooperation on sanctions appear dim as the following nine points (on China's relationship with Iran) should make clear.

?

Via JPMorgan

?

As shown below, US reliance on oil imports as a share of consumption is gradually declining. China?s percentage, on the other hand, is rising and now higher than in the US (in dollar terms, US imports are higher but they should converge in a few years)

?

The penetration rate of passenger vehicles in China is considerably lower than in other countries. China?s per capita GDP is lower as well, so the gap will not close overnight. The second chart below gives a good indication of the potential rise in automobile use in China over time. These trends are part of the reason why we do not expect reduced US imports to result in lower oil prices.

?

Vaclav sees these trends as important, since they affect prospects of China co-operating with the West on containment of Iran?s nuclear ambitions. Unfortunately for the West, the prospects for co-operation on sanctions appear dim. Some things to keep in mind about China?s relationship with Iran, described in greater detail in a 2012 Rand Institute report:

  1. Iran and China share a deep ambivalence about the West given their prior experiences as semi-colonial states in the beginning of the 20th century. The US supported a coup against a popular Iranian leader in 1953 (and also influenced other political transitions), and Communist China was under U.S.-led international sanctions for most of its existence.
  2. China extended recognition to Iran?s Islamic Republic only 3 days after its founding, and improved relations with Iran through arms sales during the Iran-Iraq war (small arms, ballistic and anti-cruise ship missiles)
  3. China became a net oil importer in 1993, and further strengthened ties with Iran. Once China was accepted into the World Trade Organization in 2001, the West lost the little leverage it had over Sino-Iranian ties.
  4. From 1985 to 1996, China provided Iran with civil nuclear technology and machinery, assistance in uranium exploration and mining, training for nuclear engineers, and instruction on the use of lasers for uranium enrichment. China ended its direct support for these nuclear programs in 1997. Chinese design and technology are seen in Iranian ballistic and anti-cruise ship missiles, anti-ship mines and fast attack boats.
  5. For the last two decades, China has built railroads, bridges, dams, ports and tunnels throughout Iran. In 2007, China became Iran?s largest trading partner, and the two countries announced plans to broaden bilateral trade to $100 bn per year by 2016.
  6. The two countries formed a joint oil and gas committee to broaden energy cooperation. China is the most important investor in Iranian exploration and extraction operations, and has been selected to develop the Azadegan and Yadavaran oil and natural gas fields, and the South Pars field. Iran is the largest methanol exporter to China, displacing Saudi Arabia.
  7. Iran used to be vulnerable to refined fuel sanctions when it imported 40% of them; China helped Iran build out its refining capacity, and Iran is now a refined fuels exporter.
  8. China is paying Iran in rice and medical/engineering supplies (and cash) in exchange for Iranian oil, and a Chinese shipyard delivered the first of 12 supertankers to Iran, giving it extra capacity to transport its oil to Asia.
  9. A couple of quotes on the geopolitics of all of this, from the Peking University School of International Studies and Renmin University: ?It is beneficial for our external environment to have the United States militarily and diplomatically deeply sunk in the Mideast to the extent that it can hardly extricate itself?, and ?Washington?s deeper involvement in the Middle East is favorable to Beijing, reducing Washington?s ability to place focused attention and pressure on China.? Why Hire A Remote Bookkeeper - Work On the Internet

If you are a small business owner and are struggling with bookkeeping, there are several options out there that you can use. But not all of them may suit your business and budget. Let us explore some of the options here.

1.You can hire an in-house bookkeeper. But this is going to bevery expensive. There are overhead costs that include the hiring and training cost of a bookkeeper, the installation of computers and other software, bookkeeper???s salary etc. This is going to cost a fortune. If you are okay with spending a lot on this, you can consider this option. But beware, most of the time it may not be worth it.

2.Another option that many business owners resort to is let a member of the family manage the books. This is not only thoughtless but risky. If you are not sure about the competence of the person, it is better not to take this option. It may seem tempting ??? because primarily you have the burden off your shoulder and you do not have to pay anything extra. But is it worth the risk? I don???t think so.

3.You still have another option. This is the use of a bookkeeping software. So far if you have been managing your books yourself with the help of spreadsheets, you can switch to software, but only if you know accounts well. Most of these software have complex accounting language. It is meant for accountants. If you can put up with that,
you can check out some online bookkeeping software and take your pick. But again, this is going to demand a lot of your time. If your primary issue is to reduce the time it takes, then this might also not be the right option.

Now we have ruled out three options. What do you do?

Don???t worry. Here is something that you will appreciate. Have you heard of the concept of remote bookkeeping? This is when a person works from home or a remote area and logs on to your computer using a remote secure connection and works on your books on your behalf. The only thing you should ensure is that the remote bookkeeper is reliable. That is why you should hire them from a professional bookkeeping agency. They would ensure security and hence reliability. Look for measures like 128-bit encryption, 27/7 surveillance, etc. Once you ensure this, you are safe to go ahead. They would work on your behalf at affordable rates. Hire a remote bookkeeper right
away and ease your troubles!

Woman who jumped overboard from cruise ship rescued

1 day

A Carnival cruise ship passenger who was spotted jumping overboard was rescued Sunday, company officials said.

The 29-year-old woman was aboard the Carnival Destiny, which had left the Port of Miami on Saturday, when she was witnessed jumping overboard around 12:10 a.m., according to a statement from the company.

The ship immediately began search and rescue operations and located the woman. She was brought on board and treated at the ship's medical center.

Ship physicians determined the woman needed further treatment at a shoreside facility and the Destiny deviated its course to Key West instead of Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

The ship, which is on a five-day Caribbean cruise, is scheduled to return on Thursday.

'Flight,' with Denzel Washington, would be tough sell to airline

People who obsess about airline safety will doubtlessly be drawn to ?Flight,? Nov. 2?s drama about the culpability of alcoholic pilot Whip Whitaker (Denzel Washington) in an aviation disaster.? But there?s one place you likely will never be able to see the movie: on an airplane.

The fees that airlines pay for movies are but a small slice of a film?s overall income, but in some cases can add up to several million dollars, which can benefit a risky drama like ?Flight.? But Paramount Pictures, the film?s financier and distributor, concedes ?Flight? will be a tough sell to any airline, even though the carrier and the plane in the film are? fictional creations, and Whitaker's heroic flying may have saved countless lives.

?Don?t think it?s going to happen,? the film?s director, Robert Zemeckis, said of the chances that ?Flight? would be shown at 30,000 feet.

Delta Air Lines, which helped train Washington in a cockpit simulator, was concerned that the film was set in Atlanta, Delta?s main hub; that the film?s plane looked a little bit like an McDonnell Douglas MD-80, which Delta flies; and that the airline at the center of the story is a Southern regional carrier.

But the production filmed in and around Atlanta to take advantage of Georgia tax rebates, and the main similarity between the MD-80 and ?Flight?s? jet is that both have engines mounted on the tail. (The real crash that was most pivotal in the film?s conception was a 2000 Alaska Airlines disaster involving an MD-83 in which 88 people died.)

On a recent United Airlines flight from New York to Los Angeles, a United pilot was asked what he had heard about the film. ?I think it?s terrible,? he said, basing his opinion on seeing the trailer, not the completed film. ?We do a lot of good work up there,? he said, pointing to the cockpit, ?and then these people come along ? they don?t understand the work we do.?

A Home Business Can Be Rewarding | Morton Metal Craft

You should know that there are so many great opportunities when it comes to home business. It?s great to work whenever you want and have no boss but yourself. Creating your own home business can take some planning though. Use our tips to help you get started.

Update your website if your inventory has run out on individual products. It?s very upsetting to order an item and find that you won?t receive it for weeks. Offer to ship the product when it comes back into stock, or suggest an alternative to keep your customers happy.

Save money by keeping good records about any expenditures you make for your business. Internet service and car mileage related to your business are a couple examples of business expenses. The great thing about these business-related expenses is that you can deduct some of them off your taxes. To avoid these unnecessary tax obligations, just remember to keep up with all of your business related expenses.

Immediate success is not prevalent in even the companies that guarantee their business program. Every home business requires an investment of time before results can be achieved. Just take your time and keep working on it, and you?ll be able to achieve the business success you have dreamed of.

You must determine how much you are going to price your merchandise for. If you are going to make your own product, you need to find out how much it costs to make. A rule-of-thumb standard says that to price a product, it should be set at twice what the merchandise costs to produce. This is the standard wholesale rate for most goods. To calculate the retail price, triple the wholesale price.

Reach out to your customers by finding out where they are. Making a real world connection with your customers can sometimes be better than reaching them online. Set up a special booth at a community event, or have a big sale in a specific area.

There are lots of home business owners congregating online. Try reading forums that are both dedicated to your target audience and even those outside of it. Other business owners may give you hints on how to run your own business.

Be certain that your home-based enterprise is compatible with your family?s lifestyle. A business that is going to demand huge changes in your family?s day-to-day lives might not be the best fit for your particular situation.

When it comes tax time, you want to make sure that you are taking all of the deductions and credits available that you can legitimately qualify for. Look for and claim every deduction that you can, and enjoy a significantly lower tax bill.

When working from home, try to always achieve your personal best. Running a home business has the potential to be fulfilling, but if you prioritize work over yourself, your self esteem could surface. Shower, watch your snacks and regularly exercise everyday. Apply this advice to improve your image and your self image.

During the process of setting up your home business, research local area business that are in similar markets and find out what they charge for goods and services. Base your rates on these businesses while trying to remain competitive. If you don?t charge what you?re worth, you won?t make enough to meet your needs.

As you can see, it will require a little bit of work and dedication to make the jump. If you can manage to pull through and stick to the plan, you will be able to accurately represent your dream in the company?s image and create something that is long-lasting and profitable over the years.

Egyptian Abortion, American Choice - NYTimes.com

HOLDMost of our friends in Egypt had experienced some form of a pregnancy loss, and we knew this going in. Here, pesticide use is rumored to be responsible for the staggering number of miscarriages, birth defects and stillbirths. Still, when I became pregnant for the third time, during my husband?s first tour with the State Department and our second year living in Cairo, I was thrilled. And when I reached the end of the first trimester, we believed that we had overcome whatever the odds were. I was confident as I lay next to the ultrasound machine. I was also alone. I had done this twice before and didn?t think my husband needed to battle Cairo traffic to be there with me.

My first stretch of quiet in some time left me alone to contemplate this third child. I was showing by then and enjoying the attention of my colleagues, hotel staff and people on the street. I was given a free piece of falafel from a vendor outside. A woman on the street told me I was having a boy, the highest blessing she could have bestowed. I began, in a moment of connectedness and spirituality that hadn?t defined either of my other pregnancies, to love this child.

The technician was cold, quick and calculating with the results. There was a sac present that indicated a cystic hygroma. The cranium was too small and the heartbeat too slow. She told me that I could take two minutes to cry, then could go in to see the doctor. In her words, it was God?s will.

I told her that I was not religious. She apologized. I waited to speak with the doctor, who confirmed that the chances of a healthy baby were effectively zero. The baby would likely be stillborn in the seventh or eighth month. If carried, miraculously, to term, it would suffer from Trisomy 18, likely Down syndrome and heart failure. It did not possess a nasal bone.

As a society, we?ve characterized one type of pregnancy and one type of abortion. A woman can keep a healthy pregnancy, or terminate one that she had been forced to conceive, or that could potentially kill her. We fell outside this dichotomy. But it was within its legal framework that my husband and I accepted that to minimize trauma on my body, and on our family, we had to terminate.

I don?t believe that we didn?t make a choice. Other women may have carried to term, or as close to term as possible, a child whose condition could allow it to live for a few days, or weeks, or maybe a few years. But faced with the impossibility of this loss, we chose to face it then, before a child had the chance to win our hearts and let us hope for the impossible.

The abortion happened in Arabic and English, and I was grateful for the occasional pieces of conversation I didn?t understand. It happened in an understaffed hospital, in which I lay in bed with the fetus for 20 minutes after it was expelled, waiting for a nurse to remove it. I didn?t want to see it, and neither did my husband. That was another choice we had made. We came home that night, drank some wine and focused on my physical recovery. I rested. In the coming days, as we collected and submitted the paperwork for our insurance company, the loss of a baby that we had briefly imagined began to sink in. We had wanted the age gap and family dynamic that we had begun to believe was coming to us. We knocked off work early, and the children ? babies, really, not the oldest and middle child that my fatigued, pregnant body had come to see them as ? ate dinner with us on the couch, smeared hummus over everything and took full advantage of their space to behave as children in a household that loved them and had deeply wanted them from the start.

Then our insurance company responded. Our claim had been denied. Because the pregnancy was not the result of rape or incest and did not threaten my life, it was considered an elective procedure. We relied on federal insurance, the same plan available to all State Department employees. It?s a basic plan, adequate for our typical needs, but bound by legal restrictions concerning federal spending and abortion. We gathered the paperwork necessary to rebut their claim, but knowing its futility, began digging up $5,000 to pay for the abortion.

While the tone and content of the abortion debate has shifted and raged over the past several years, a steady 50 percent have believed that abortion should only be legal under the hardest of circumstances. My insurance company did not lie, and they didn?t make up the rules. In keeping with this moderate stance, they rejected our claim. We can, by giving up a trip home, stretching our grocery budget and ending our date nights, pay for our choice. But what?s been lost in this compromise is how tough that choice can be.

Difference Between Enculturation and Acculturation: Enculturation ...

Enculturation vs Acculturation
?

Enculturation and acculturation are terms that are used in sociology and social anthropology, to explain different processes of absorption of cultural traits by the people. Both processes help in explaining socialization on individuals in a society. Enculturation helps a person living in a society imbibe and immerse social values of the culture that surrounds him. There is another term acculturation that is sometimes used for this very process and confuses many. There are subtle differences between enculturation and acculturation that will be highlighted in this article.

Enculturation

The process of socialization that helps a person to acquire social norms, values, behaviors, language and other tools of the culture that surrounds him in a society is labeled as enculturation. Much help in this process comes from parents, peers and siblings that provide the necessary push and pull to make a person learn what makes him socially more or better fit in his society. All people in the society learn about acceptable behaviors and the behaviors they need to avoid.

Acculturation

Acculturation is a process of socialization that takes place whenever there is a meeting of two different cultures. These changes taking place can be seen both at cultural as well as psychological levels. Both the cultures are affected with changes seen or felt in both cultures. The changes that can be seen easily are the changes in clothing, language, and customs or practices. However, despite claims by anthropologists and sociologists about acculturation being a two way process of change, there is proof to suggest that changes take place mostly in the norms and values apart from clothing and language of minorities living inside a country rather than affecting majority customs and traditions.

What is the difference between Enculturation and Acculturation?

? Both enculturation and acculturation are processes of socialization taking place in a society.

? Whereas enculturation is a process that helps an individual to imbibe social values, norms, customs etc. of the culture he lives in, acculturation is a two way change process that takes placed when there is a meeting of two cultures.

? In acculturation there are changes felt in both cultures though mostly it is the minority culture that gets changed by way of changed language, clothing, customs and practices.

? Enculturation helps an individual to survive and better fit into the culture he finds himself surrounded.

? No difference between the two terms is accepted in some countries where acculturation is considered as same as enculturation.
