Lady Gaga, Madonna, Nicki Minaj Top 2012's Most Anticipated Albums1676533

Mumford & Sons, Justin Bieber, Rick Ross also prepping new material.

The past 12 months have seen the release of monster albums from Adele, Lady Gaga, Drake, Taylor Swift, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj. But the next 12 are promising to bring even more music from several of those artists, plus new albums from Mumford & Sons, Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Linkin Park, Paramore, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, Maroon 5 and Green Day. It's a bumper crop of major albums from some of rock, pop and hip-hop's biggest stars, who are returning from long breaks, hoping to follow up smash debuts or just trying to keep their momentum going. While release dates are always subject to change, here are some of the most anticipated releases of 2012.

Pop:
Ironically, the status of new albums from the artists whose next moves everyone is most curious about are the ones most in the air. Rihanna tends to deliver a new album every 12 or 13 months, which means that she may have another disc in stores at the end of next year once the just-released Talk That Talk has run its course. On the other hand, Lady Gaga has already begun talking about her follow-up to this year's Born This Way. Gaga recently told MTV News that she's already started writing songs and "all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place." She didn't give a potential release date, only promising, "I'll put it out when it's done." Katy Perry hasn't publicly spoken about what will come after 2010's smash Teenage Dream, but it's possible she could start work on new material in 2012 as well. We know for sure that Justin Bieber is planning to show his more mature side next time around, possibly even incorporating some EDM sounds into the mix. It's been confirmed that Madonna hooked up with M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj for the single "Gimme All Your Luvin' " from her untitled forthcoming album, which will feature production from Ray of Light producer William Orbit. Other artists who could release fresh material in 2012: No Doubt, Maroon 5, Avril Lavigne, Miley Cyrus, Christina Aguilera, Ke$ha and Nicole Scherzinger.

Hip-Hop:
Two titans of rap are cueing up fresh tracks for early 2012, with Nicki Minaj likely to get out of the gate first with her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, due out on Valentine's Day. The disc will include first single "Roman in Moscow," which sees the Best New Artist Grammy nominee getting into the character of her alter ego, Roman Zolanski. After the delay of God Forgives, I Don't due to a pair of seizures he suffered in October, Rick Ross is expected to come back strong as well. The Bawse has taken his convalescent time to work on a new track with Jay-Z. Speaking of Jigga, fans may get a new record from him as well, considering he told MTV News he was cooking up fresh tracks way back when he first played us songs from his Kanye West collaborative album, Watch the Throne. In fact, Jay-Z said you might get solo albums from both men as well as the second Throne release. Other artists that should have albums hitting stores in 2012: Nas, Frank Ocean, Slaughterhouse, Wiz Khalifa, the G.O.O.D. Music compilation, T.I., Big Sean, 50 Cent, Ludacris, Big K.R.I.T., Meek Mill and potentially two discs from Lil Wayne, I Am Not a Human Being II and Rebirth II. Rock:
Some of rock's biggest guns are reloading for 2012, among them Green Day, who debuted some new tracks at a benefit show in August. The title of the follow-up to 2009's 21st Century Breakdown hasn't been announced yet, but some of the early songs slated for possible inclusion are "Nuclear Family," "Carpe Diem" and "Sweet 16." U2 have reportedly been cooking up a number of potential new albums, logging sessions with Danger Mouse and working with French producer/DJ David Guetta, RedOne and will.i.am on a disc of dance-oriented tunes. Prog rock revivalists Muse should also have some new material for us, with bassist Chris Wolstenholme promising in a recent interview that the sound on their sixth album will be "radically different" from 2009's The Resistance. We may get something from Linkin Park, who are prepping the follow-up to 2010's A Thousand Suns, and Mumford & Sons. It's been two years since the British folk rock revivalists dropped their still strong-selling debut, Sigh No More, and they began giving fans a taste of some new material in the fall when they unveiled the majestic song "Ghosts." After a rough year, Paramore have finally put the drama behind them and they're super-psyched to record an album free of tension and inter-band awkwardness. So far, they've already unwrapped the bouncy "Renegade" and "Hello Cold World," which bode well for their fourth full-length studio album. Other rock acts slated to release new albums: the reunited Soundgarden, Foster the People, Neon Trees, Sleigh Bells, Silversun Pickups, Bruce Springsteen and All-American Rejects. Which 2012 albums are you most excited about? Which ones did we miss? Let us know in comments below.

NCAA Basketball Rankings: Colorado Buffaloes Women's Basketball Undefeated, Unranked In AP Poll

The Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team has gone 11-0 in non-conference play and begins its first-ever Pac-12 conference schedule on Dec. 31 against the other new member of the Pac-12, the Utah Utes. But not even an undefeated record can get the Buffs even one vote in the latest AP poll.

Maybe if they defeat the currently-No. 4 Stanford Cardinal on Saturday, Jan. 14, the women's basketball team will crack the poll.

LifeShield extends LifeView apps to Android tablets, smartphones, iPhone

CBR Staff Writer Published 23 December 2011

Customers can manage their LifeShield home security system from their preferred mobile device

LifeShield Security has extended the availability of its LifeView by including Android tablets and smartphones, as well as the Apple iPhone, so customers can manage their LifeShield home security system from their preferred mobile device.

LifeView's new portal enables total interactivity with the LifeShield home security system through a simple interface with graphics and instinctual navigation that allows users of all ages to manage their home security system from their iPad, iPhone, Android tablet or Android smartphone.

Within the LifeView app, users manage their system via the console tab which is colour-coded, easy to read and shows the status of every sensor and users can view the 20 most recent events instantly. If a user has cameras installed, the LifeView app will also take snapshots when the app is launched so the user can instantly view current images from every camera installed throughout the home.

LifeView's user interface also allows customers to log in to access every LifeShield system setting and the console tab, users can access the camera tab for all pictures and videos, as well as the ability to view live video, and the history tab to scan the last 90 days of history.

Users can also arm the system with one touch and quickly disarm the system via user code, create new event notifications and camera triggers, and add or remove users any time.

LifeShield's next generation home security system offers encrypted wireless technology that allows for easy set-up, a lower cost of ownership and free, customisable monitoring options.

LifeShield Security founder and COO Lou Stilp said LifeShield's enhanced application opens the door for iPhone, tablet and smartphone users to fully control their LifeShield system from their portable or handheld device.

"This is the same app we recently announced to the Apple iPad community - so it delivers the same superior user interface that attaches to the customer and not their house. There is no other home security company that offers as many functions in a single application as the LifeView app," said Stilp.

Analysis: Isolated on tax cut, House GOP blinks

(AP) ? With tea party-backed first-termers calling the shots, House Republicans snatched political defeat from the jaws of victory in a year-end showdown over Social Security payroll tax cuts and jobless benefits.

This time, they pushed the country to the brink ? and wound up blinking.

"In the end House Republicans felt like they were re-enacting the Alamo, with no reinforcements and our friends shooting at us," said veteran Republican Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas.

Precisely.

By spurning a deal that Senate Republicans had embraced, for a two-month extension of tax cuts for 160 million Americans and jobless benefits for millions more, the House wing of the party isolated itself politically and by some calculations improved President Barack Obama's re-election prospects.

Friday brought a humbling surrender, the only realistic alternative despite grumbling from scattered holdouts and Newt Gingrich, courting tea party support in the race for the presidential nomination.

By then, even allies said Republicans had become vulnerable to Obama's accusation that they, alone, were threatening a fragile economic recovery and the well-being of the employed and unemployed alike. "Right now, the bipartisan compromise that was reached on Saturday is the only viable way to prevent a tax hike on Jan. 1," Obama said Tuesday after the House rejected the two-month measure that had sailed through the Senate on a vote of 89-10.

The reliably conservative editorial page of The Wall Street Journal piled on, referring to a circular Republican firing squad. The GOP has "achieved the small miracle of letting Mr. Obama position himself as an election-year tax cutter. ... This should be impossible," it wrote on Wednesday.

One poll said Obama ran ahead of Republicans when it came to handling taxes, an issue that has generally favored the GOP since Ronald Reagan sat in the White House three decades ago.

No less critical were Senate Republicans, fearing the impact on their own political prospects, both individually and as a group eager to gain a majority in the 2012 elections. A gain of four seats would give them control, and several close races are likely. Losses suddenly seemed possible instead. There was in even talk that the hardline stance by House Republicans was putting the GOP's big majority in that chamber in danger.

Most importantly, for the first time all year, Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell wasn't in a position to help as House Speaker John Boehner sought to carry out the wishes of his rank and file, the Kentucky senator having voted for the bill that House Republicans insisted was a loser.

At its core, the dispute was a simple one.

Talks between the two parties in the Senate on a full-year extension faltered when negotiators could not agree on the cuts needed to make sure the measure did not increase deficits. The two-month stopgap bill was designed to keep the tax cuts and jobless benefits going until the negotiations could resume again after the first of the year.

To the tea party types, that smacked of government as usual, precisely what they came to Washington to change.

"We're as unified as we've been all year," said Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, on the night before the House Republicans rejected the Senate bill, demanded negotiations on a compromise and drove themselves into a political dead end.

This time, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Democrats had no incentive to negotiate, unlike earlier when brinkmanship pushed the government to the edge of a partial shutdown or an unprecedented default.

They and the White House had already caved to Republican demands that any extension be paid for, and that Obama decide within 60 days whether to allow construction of an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas.

The president had threatened to veto any measure that linked tax cuts and the pipeline, hoping to postpone a decision on the project until after the election. Late last week, he did an about-face and demanded Congress send him a bill that did precisely that.

The reversal gave Republicans the political victory some had sought if they were going to approve an extension of the tax cuts and jobless benefits at the core of Obama's jobless program.

Boehner told House Republicans as much in a conference call on Saturday, according to several officials who listened. They added he recommended no specific course of action and sought the all views.

Some lawmakers suspected Boehner had acquiesced in the two-month extension that McConnell worked out, and he was challenged on it 48 hours later in a closed-door meeting. He bristled at the accusation, according to several participants, and denied it flatly.

There were hints of infighting. Behind closed doors, one Republican lawmaker raised a concern about a memo ? inaccurate, he said ? from an unidentified staff aide who wrote that Boehner favored a more conciliatory approach than Majority Leader Eric Cantor and other members of the leadership.

"We're here and ready to work," Boehner told reporters on Wednesday morning. He spoke at a made-for-television event with Cantor and the eight Republicans, including three first-termers, appointed to conduct non-existent negotiations with Democrats.

Little more than 24 hours later, the charade ended when Boehner informed his own rank and file, no consultations permitted.

By then, even two newcomers to the House had issued public statements calling for an end to the standoff.

"I don't think that my constituents should have a tax increase because of Washington's dysfunction," said freshman Rep. Sean Duffy, R-Wis., now a voting member of the government he was criticizing.

The struggle over, Reid said he hoped the episode had been "a very good learning experience, especially to those who are newer" to Congress.

"Everything we do around here does not have to wind up in a fight."

"Basketball Wives" Evelyn Lozada Sued For Helping Blow NBA Star's Fortune

'Basketball Wives' Star Sued for Helping Blow NBA Star's Fortune

1223_antoine_walker_ex_getty_ex2
Evelyn Lozada
-- one of the stars of "Basketball Wives" who was once engaged to former NBA All-Star Antoine Walker -- is being sued for allegedly receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars illegally.

The story is shocking.? Walker raked in a whopping $110 million during his NBA career, in addition to untold millions in endorsements and other deals ... and he blew ALL OF IT and a lot more.

Walker filed for bankruptcy last year, and now the bankruptcy trustee smells a rat.? It seems Walker gave Lozada $560,000 when he already knew he was going belly up.? The trustee has sued Lozada, claiming the transfer was fraudulent -- an attempt to hide money from legitimate creditors.

The trustee says Lozada used the money to start a Miami shoe store called Dulce, and now the trustee wants the $560k back.

We're told Lozada and Walker insist there was no funny business.? He gave her the money to help pay her bills.? Sources say Lozada funded Dulce NOT with the $560k, but by selling her engagement ring.? And, our sources say, Lozada had no idea Walker was so deep in debt.

Rich people's problems ...

County's proposed gas/oil regulations making way through pipeline

For a little light reading over the holidays, head to the El Paso County website and dig into the 36-pages of regulations and procedures that are being proposed to govern gas and oil drilling in unincorporated parts of the county.

Or let county project manager and planner Craig Dossey sum up what he believes are the highlights:

? Requirements for comprehensive groundwater monitoring
? A prohibition on surface pits to collect water used in drilling
? And plenty of opportunity for public input along the way.

?It?s definitely appropriate for us to allow for public comment because there are a lot of unknowns, and that creates a lot of impacts, especially when there are larger-scale facilities,? said Dossey, who was instrumental in drafting the regulations.

El Paso County has never had rules and procedures specifically relating to the oversight of gas and oil drilling, although the activity was included in general regulations tied to mineral resource extraction. But in 1990, Dossey said, an amendment to a state statue took oil and gas drilling out of the equation.

?This is the first time El Paso County has gone down the road of regulating oil and gas since the code was revised in 1990 to expressly remove oil and gas from the definition of mineral resource extraction,? he said.

Driving the push to get regulations on the books as soon as possible is a move by Ultra Resources of Houston to begin exploratory drilling in both unincorporated El Paso County and the city of Colorado Springs, which is looking into its drafting its own rules.

In late September, El Paso County commissioners imposed a four-month moratorium on issuing new exploratory drilling permits so county officials could have time to write local land-use regulations. But they revised it a few weeks later and gave Ultra Resources approval to do exploratory drilling on three sites that sit on Colorado State Land Board property. The county is now waiting for Ultra Resources to resubmit its plans with some minor revisions.

Ultra Resources also received an extension on a permit for a fourth site that was held by another company until earlier this year. That site is ready for drilling at any time, Dossey said.

Ultra Resources spokeswoman Kelly Whitley said the company plans to start drilling the first part of 2012 at all approved sites in the county, but she didn?t have a more definite time frame.

Because the new regulations haven?t been adopted, Ultra Resources? most immediate projects fall under the county?s general development review process, Dossey said. But the county wanted to move forward with industry-specific regulations because of burgeoning interest in the area as a potential hot spot for oil and gas, spurred by a successful 2009 oil strike in Weld County in the same shale and limestone formation that lies beneath a swath of Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska.

Dossey said the regulations were drafted after consultation with a number of county and state agencies, including the county attorney?s office, El Paso Public Health, the Colorado Department of Transportation, and state wildlife officials.

He said the regulations surrounding groundwater monitoring would be more comprehensive and longer-lasting than the state?s.

?Ours requires annual testing for the first six years, and every five years thereafter until 10 years after the life of the well,? Dossey said. ?You don?t see that anywhere else in the state.?

He also said the prohibition of surface pits to collect water used in drilling would make the industry use another system that is growing in popularity. There would be a waiver for companies that want to use a surface pit, he said, but commissioners would have to approve it after a public hearing.

The regulations also would require thorough assessments of the impact on wildlife; roads, bridges and traffic; and drainage.

Dossey noted that under the proposed regulations, ?minor? oil and gas facilities, such as single vertical wells used in exploratory drilling, can be approved by the county development services director without a requirement for a public hearing. However, he said, the director still has an option to call for a public hearing on a minor project, if warranted.
?
WANT TO WEIGH IN?
The El Paso Board of County Commissioners will hold a work session on the proposed oil and gas land use regulations at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Pikes Peak Regional Development Center, 2880 International Circle. The meeting is open to the public.
At 9 a.m. Jan. 4, the county Development Services Department will present its recommendation during a public hearing at a special meeting of the county Planning Commission at the same location.
At 9 a.m. Jan. 19, county commissioners will take up the proposed regulations, along with comments and revisions, at its regular meeting at the Pikes Peak Regional Development Center.
Click here to see a draft copy of the regulations (scroll down to "current information" on the righthand side of the Development Services Department Home Page).

Toasty planets circle stellar heart

Roasted remains orbit former red giant

Web edition : Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

It?s rude to play with your food, even if you?re a star.

One of the stars in the Kepler space telescope?s crosshairs has apparently regurgitated the Earth-sized remains of two planets ingested when the star temporarily ballooned into a red giant. Now, the rocky survivors are whizzing around the star?s small, pulsing heart, each completing its orbit in less than 10 hours.

At least, that?s the interpretation offered by an international team thatreports the oddball planetary system in the Dec. 22 Nature. While some astronomers are skeptical of the explanation, if the story holds up it could explain how a rare type of star forms and foreshadow the fates of enormous planets engulfed by their hosts.

?The idea that a planet could survive while being immersed in a star is pretty spectacular,? says Eliza Kempton, an astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz. ?It?s a really interesting discovery if it does pan out.?

The star is a rare beast, a hot B subdwarf, and the two roasted planets ? KOI 55.01 and 55.02 ? are the purported cores of partially digested planets that started off larger than Jupiter and are now just toasty crisps a bit smaller than Earth. They?re squished right next to the star, orbiting at less than 1 percent the distance between Earth and the sun.

Normally, a star like the sun evolves into a red giant, then collapses into a white dwarf. But sometimes, the giant sheds its stellar skin before contracting, leaving behind a bright, beating heart ? the hot B subdwarf. Scientists don?t know what provokes some red giants to molt, but hypothesize that a companion ? whether it?s a second star or a planet ? might instigate the transformation. A culprit planet would need to be at least several times as large as Jupiter, large enough to leave behind the surviving remnants, says astrophysicist and study coauthor Stephane Charpinet of the University of Toulouse in France. ?

To spy the tenacious travelers, scientists monitored enigmatic signals muddying the star?s normal pulsations. Like bells, stars vibrate and ring at certain tones. This one, called KIC 05807616, had several subtle tones that couldn?t be explained by the star alone, Charpinet says. He and the team ruled out other explanations such as star spots or a stellar companion before deciding that planets were the most likely culprits of the star?s abnormal jingles.

But some scientists are skeptical about the team?s interpretation, pointing to a number of assumptions the team used to calculate the size and properties of the proposed planets and the need for additional observations of other similar stars.

?I?m not convinced,? says astronomer John Johnson of Caltech. ?This doesn?t have to be wrong, but I have my doubts.?

Planets have been discovered in inhospitable locations before. The first extrasolar planet to be discovered was found orbiting a pulsar, the dense, rapidly spinning remains of a star that has gone supernova.? Planet remains have also been found in the atmospheres of white dwarfs. And on December 19, scientists reported on arXiv.org the discovery of a Jupiter-sized planet orbiting a binary star system that included the same type of hot B subdwarf.

EU clears HBO, Ziggo Dutch pay-TV joint venture (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? HBO Sub, a subsidiary of U.S. cable network HBO, and Dutch cable company Ziggo HBO Netherland won EU approval on Wednesday to set up a Dutch pay-TV services joint venture.

The European Commission, the EU competition watchdog, said the deal would not lead to any competition issues.

"On the contrary, the proposed transaction will increase competition in the acquisition of pay-TV content and in the wholesale of pay-TV channels in the Netherlands," it said in a statement.

HBO is owned by U.S. media company Time Warner.

Occupy protesters arrested in New York (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Hundreds of anti-Wall Street protesters took to New York City's streets on Saturday in an attempt to establish a new encampment, with scores arrested as they tried to move onto church-owned land.

The protesters had used a wooden ladder to climb over a chain-link fence into the lot owned by Trinity Church, an Occupy Wall Street spokesman said.

Police had no immediate figure on how many protesters were arrested, but Gideon Oliver, president of the New York City chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, put the number at about 55, including between five and 10 members of the clergy.

The demonstrators continued moving around Manhattan's streets into the evening, at one point saying they were headed to the house of the Trinity Church rector.

"We are unstoppable. Another world is possible," and "Whose street? Our street," were among the chants from the protesters, who blocked some streets as they marched.

Later, as they started to move toward Midtown, some of the demonstrators were hemmed in by lines of police, and police on motorcycles tried to disperse protesters who were in the middle of streets.

The Occupy movement began with protesters taking over a park in New York in September to draw attention to economic inequality and a financial system they say is unfairly skewed toward the wealthy.

In ensuing weeks the protests and encampments spread to cities throughout the United States as well as to some in other countries.

But Occupy camps in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and a number of other major cities were shut down in recent weeks in operations that resulted in hundreds of arrests and have raised questions about the movement's future.

Authorities have justified their moves against the camps on a variety of grounds, including that the camps were causing sanitation problems and were dangerous to public safety.

Surgical Checklist Helps Lower Patient Death Rates, Study Shows

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - A surgical checklist, similar to what pilots use before every flight, can lower patient death rates, a study at one hospital confirms -- though the drop was smaller than past research has found.

About 100,000 hospitals worldwide now use the surgical safety checklist developed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The list has 19 items that the surgical team checks right before and after a patient's procedure. That includes making sure they have the right patient, that they're operating on the correct body site and are aware of the patient's allergies.

A 2009 study of eight hospitals in different countries found that in the year after the centers adopted the WHO checklist, the overall death rate among surgery patients dropped from 1.5 percent to 0.8 percent.

In the new study, researchers at University Medical Center Utrecht, in the Netherlands, found a significantly smaller effect at their hospital.

Surgery patients' death rate dipped from 3.1 percent to 2.8 percent in the year-and-a-half after the hospital took up the WHO checklist.

But a lot depended on surgical teams' actually completing the checklist, the researchers report in the Annals of Surgery.

Patients with fully completed checklists, they found, had about one-third of the death risk of those without checklists. But the lists were completed for only 39 percent of patients.

"Checklist compliance was clearly far from perfect in our hospital," write Dr. Wilton A. van Klein and his colleagues.

One reason for that was that more-critical patients needing emergency surgery were less likely to have a completed checklist. But that did not seem to explain the lower death risk among patients with fully completed checklists, according to the researchers.

"Mortality was strongly associated with checklist compliance," van Klein's team writes, "suggesting that large variations in the level of implementation for different groups of patients need to be reduced."

One possible reason for the smaller effects compared with the 2009 study is differences among hospitals, according to van Klein and his colleagues.

Their center is a university hospital that tends to get more critically ill patients than a community hospital would. And the overall death rate among surgery patients there was higher than the average seen in the 2009 study, which included a mix of university and community centers.

The current findings are more in line with a recent study of U.S. Veterans Health Administration (VHA) hospitals, van Klein's team writes.

The VHA, which is the largest integrated health system in the U.S., has taken steps to cut medical errors -- which includes checklists and special training sessions to stress teamwork among staff.

A study earlier this year found that the number of medical errors at VHA hospitals -- like operating on the wrong patient, or the wrong side of a patient's body -- dropped from 3.2 to 2.4 per month, between 2006 and 2009.

It's estimated that across the U.S., medical errors occur in about one in 75,000 surgeries every year.

And surgical checklists alone are unlikely to be enough without an overall focus on the "safety culture" at hospitals, van Klein's team writes.

What's more, safety is an issue not only around the time of surgery. Some of the biggest problems in hospitals are infections, medication errors and injuries to patients who fall, according to WHO.

PFT: Giants' Boley accused of child abuse

Broncos Vikings FootballAP

It took Broncos coach John Fox a while to warm up to the unique skills of Tim Tebow.? Even though Fox apparently has decided to ignore the niceties of the traditional quarterback position and to embrace the fact that Tebow is leading his team to victory after victory in 2011, Fox isn?t ready to anoint Tebow as the team?s quarterback for 2012.

?We get that question a lot, whether it?s John Elway or myself,? Fox told Jim Rome on Friday.? ?We?re both his biggest fans.? I mean, we love him.? How would you not at 7-1?? I think right now, all our focus is, let?s get this season done.

?We love him, he?s great, we?re pulling for him, and you know, we?ll make those decisions when this season is over and not worry about next season at this point.?

That?s fine, but what does the guy need to do to show that he?s the team?s quarterback of the future?? Plenty of quarterbacks with far lower winning percentages than Tebow have locked down the year-in, year-out starting jobs with their teams.

So why not Tebow?? As quarterbacks go, the Broncos could do a hell of a lot worse, and plenty of teams would surely pounce on the opportunity to make the until-further-notice starter a guy who has won games, elevated his team, generated unprecedented excitement among the fan base, and provided an anti-Hurd role model to the youth of America.

Maybe Fox is worried that it?s all a fluke.? Or maybe he?s concerned that Tebow won?t play as well without the added motivation of constantly having to prove himself.? Regardless, Tebow provides a solid foundation around which to build the team for the next decade.

If the Broncos won?t realize that, some other team will.

Traumatic experiences may make you tough

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Your parents were right: Hard experiences may indeed make you tough. Psychological scientists have found that, while going through many experiences like assault, hurricanes, and bereavement can be psychologically damaging, small amounts of trauma may help people develop resilience.

"Of course, everybody's heard the aphorism, 'Whatever does not kill you makes you stronger,'" says Mark D. Seery of the University at Buffalo. His paper on adversity and resilience appears in the December issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. But in psychology, he says, a lot of ideas that seem like common sense aren't supported by scientific evidence.

Indeed, a lot of solid psychology research shows that having miserable life experiences is bad for you. Serious events, like the death of a child or parent, a natural disaster, being physically attacked, experiencing sexual abuse, or being forcibly separated from your family, can cause psychological problems. In fact, some research has suggested that the best way to go through life is having nothing ever happen to you. But not only is that unrealistic, it's not necessarily healthy, Seery says.

In one study, Seery and his colleagues found that people who experienced many traumatic life events were more distressed in general -- but they also found that people who had experienced no negative life events had similar problems. The people with the best outcomes were those who had experienced some negative events. Another study found that people with chronic back pain were able to get around better if they had experienced some serious adversity, whereas people with either a lot of adversity or none at all were more impaired.

One possibility for this pattern is that people who have been through difficult experiences have had a chance to develop their ability to cope. "The idea is that negative life experiences can toughen people, making them better able to manage subsequent difficulties," Seery says. In addition, people who get through bad events may have tested out their social network, learning how to get help when they need it.

This research isn't telling parents to abuse their kids so they'll grow up to be well-adjusted adults, Seery says. "Negative events have negative effects," he says. "I really look at this as being a silver lining. Just because something bad has happened to someone doesn't mean they're doomed to be damaged from that point on."

The article is entitled, Resilience: A Silver Lining to Experiencing Adverse Life Events?.

ECB chief says euro zone on right track (Reuters)

BERLIN/BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Europe's top central banker said on Thursday that euro zone governments are on the right track to restore market confidence but reminded them that an emergency program to buy their bonds was "neither eternal nor infinite".

Mario Draghi's comments came after a smooth Spanish bond auction eased fears of an accelerating slide in European markets following a summit last week that failed to reassure investors the single currency area is closer to resolving its debt crisis.

The European Central Bank chief said in a speech in Berlin that the 17 euro zone governments "are now on the right track and they are right in implementing budgetary consolidation resolutely.

"The unavoidable short-term (economic) contraction may be mitigated by the return of confidence," he said.

To mitigate risk aversion rife in markets, Draghi said more policy clarity was necessary, and he urged politicians to "speak unambiguously", then "deliver".

Spanish bond yields fell, narrowing the spread over German Bunds, after the country surprised markets by selling far more than the amount targeted in its last bond sale of the year, although come of its costs of borrowing remained close to euro-era highs.

The euro rose for a while above $1.30 after touching an 11-month low of $1.2945 on Wednesday, and European shares gained more than three-quarters of a percent partly due to relief over the Spanish auction.

With many financial institutions closing their books for the year, the next major market test for the euro zone is widely expected in mid-January, when Italy has to start rolling over more than 100 billion euros of expiring debt by April.

To try to restore market confidence in the euro zone's third largest economy, Rome's new technocratic government has called a confidence vote in parliament on Friday to speed up approval of a 33-billion euro ($43 billion)austerity package.

Prime Minister Mario Monti has raced to push through a law that cuts spending and raises taxes to shore up public finances and cut a debt running at 120 percent of gross domestic product. The government resorted to a confidence vote to curb debate on dozens of amendments, many tabled by the opposition Northern League.

GROWTH MISSING

European Union leaders will hold another summit in Brussels in late January or early February to discuss economic growth and jobs as the 27-nation bloc heads into a "quasi-recession," European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said on Thursday.

Germany and France called on Wednesday for an extra meeting to discuss growth at a time when the euro zone looks likely to enter recession in the last quarter of this year. EU leaders last met on December 8-9, when they agreed to forge a new pact for stricter enforcement of debt and deficit rules in the euro zone.

"In times of stagnation, in times of even quasi-recession, it is very important to have those topics on the agenda and not only speaking on fiscal consolidation," Van Rompuy said.

There are growing concerns that policymakers' focus on cutting spending to rapidly reduce deficits is making it harder to stimulate growth and create jobs, especially for the young.

Critics say the harsh austerity budgets being implemented across southern Europe will plunge those countries deeper into recession, fuelling a vicious cycle of economic contraction and falling revenues, and risking severe social unrest.

Greece, crushed under a debt mountain equivalent to 160 percent of annual output, is the most striking illustration. Its economy is now expected to contract by 6 percent this year and its budget deficit will top 10 percent of GDP despite draconian spending cuts.

The International Monetary Fund's chief negotiator with Athens, Poul Thomsen, urged the Greek government on Wednesday to rethink "taboos" and start laying off state workers because it could no longer rely on more tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts.

Draghi said that in the medium term, "sustainable growth can be achieved only by undertaking deep structural reforms that have been procrastinated for too long".

Speaking to the economically conservative Ludwig Erhard Foundation in Berlin under a banner bearing the quotation "Inflation is an expropriation without compensation for the benefit of the public purse", the Italian ECB chief was given a warm reception by the guardians of German monetary orthodoxy.

Asked how many more government bonds he would buy before a planned new treaty on fiscal union was ratified, Draghi replied: "We have an SMP (securities market program) in place and as I've said several times it is neither eternal nor infinite."

He quickly moved on to the next subject, eliciting laughter.

Protests at climate change summit

Thousands of demonstrators have marched through the South African city of Durban demanding faster action on climate change.

The annual UN climate summit is being held at the city's convention centre.

Protesters were particularly angered by the stance of rich countries such as the US and Canada.

In London. former UK Deputy Prime Minister Lord Prescott said the approach of these nations was "appalling".

Halfway through this summit, some progress has been made, but a few countries including the US, Canada and Saudi Arabia are holding out on important issues such as the future of the Kyoto Protocol.

Fourteen years ago, Lord Prescott played a leading role in the UN summit in Kyoto that brought the protocol into existence.

Speaking to the BBC, he was scathing about nations trying to delay progress now.

Adaptation

Action that helps cope with the effects of climate change - for example construction of barriers to protect against rising sea levels, or conversion to crops capable of surviving high temperatures and drought.

"Let's have a reassessment of it by 2015." he said. "But if you don't finish in time for the ending of Kyoto Two, which is next year, 2012, then, you know, it will actually wither on the vine and that's what Canada and America wants - and one or two other rich countries.

"It's a conspiracy against the poor. It's appalling. I'm ashamed of such countries not recognising their responsibilities."

The European Union wants talks on a new global agreement covering all nations to start as soon as possible.

It is backed by most of the world's poorest countries and small island states vulnerable to rising sea levels.

But even if resistance from the US and others can be overcome, it is hard to envisage anything being agreed that can start to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions before 2020.

And that is the timeframe science suggests is necessary if the most dangerous climate impacts are to be avoided.

Sheriff: McCready didn't belong at Arkansas home (omg!)

FILE - In this undated file photo, country singer Mindy McCready performs in Nashville, Tenn. A missing persons report has been filed for McCready and her 5-year-old son Zander. The Department of Children and Families says the report was filed with Cape Coral Police Tuesday night after McCready took Zander from McCready's father's home. McCready doesn't have custody of her son ? her mother does ? and was allowed to visit the boy at her father's home. (AP Photo/Mark Humphrey, file)

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) ? An Arkansas sheriff said that country singer Mindy McCready didn't have permission to be in the unoccupied summer home where she was found Friday evening with her 5-year-old son. Authorities continue to investigate the matter.

Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss said in a news release Saturday that authorities located McCready after receiving a report of "possible occupants in a summer home that was supposed to be unoccupied."

Moss said officers entered the home and found McCready and her son in a closet. A man, David Wilson, was also in the residence. Moss said neither had permission to be in the residence. Neither was arrested at the time.

The boy, Zander, was taken into custody by the Arkansas Department of Human Services consistent with a Florida judge's order that the boy be returned to that state. The child had been in the custody of his legal guardian, McCready's mother. McCready didn't respond to emails late Friday.

Neandertals? mammoth building project

Extinct hominids may have been first to build with bones

Web edition : Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Neandertals are stumping for bragging rights as the first builders of mammoth-bone structures, an accomplishment usually attributed to Stone Age people.

Humanity?s extinct cousins constructed a large, ring-shaped enclosure out of 116 mammoth bones and tusks at least 44,000 years ago in West Asia, say archaeologist La?titia Demay of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and her colleagues. The bone edifice, which encircles a 40-square-meter area in which mammoths and other animals were butchered, cooked and eaten, served either to keep out cold winds or as a base for a wooden building, the scientists propose in a paper published online November 26 in Quaternary International.

Mammoth-bone huts previously discovered at Homo sapiens sites in West Asia date to between 27,500 and 15,000 years ago. The new discovery comes from Molodova, a Ukrainian site first excavated in the 1950s. There, Neandertals erected a mammoth-bone structure that?s unlike later mammoth-bone huts, suggesting that the two Homo species developed these practices independently, says study coauthor St?phane P?an, also of France?s National Museum of Natural History.

Researchers have argued for decades about whether Molodova Neandertals left mammoth bones scattered about or built something out of them.

?My own inclination is to assume that some type of mammoth-bone structure, maybe a wind break, was present at Molodova,? remarks archaeologist John Hoffecker of the University of Colorado Boulder. A Czech Republic site of comparable age contains a similar circle of mammoth bones, Hoffecker says.

It?s hard to know whether Neandertals or modern humans occupied Molodova, he cautions. African Homo sapiens reached Europe by 45,000 years ago (SN Online: 11/2/11), and discoveries in the last few years indicate that those early migrants made stone tools much like those found at Molodova and traditionally attributed to Neandertals, Hoffecker says. No fossils have been unearthed at the Ukrainian site, leaving the identity of its occupants uncertain, in his view.

Demay?s team regards Molodova stone tools as typical of Neandertals that lived in Europe and West Asia before modern humans showed up.

Neandertals assembled the circular Molodova structure out of the largest and strongest parts of mammoth skeletons ? mainly tusks, shoulders, ribs and hips, the scientists say. Weathering and water damage on the bones indicate that they were placed in a shallow trench.

Remains of at least 15 mammoths, all bearing stone-tool marks but few signs of chewing by nonhuman animals, were uncovered inside the bone enclosure. Excavations also produced bones of red deer, bison and other animals that contained butchery marks. Meat from these animals was cooked in 15 fire pits arrayed throughout the site.

Neandertal groups consisting of no more than around 30 individuals, P?an proposes, periodically camped at Molodova while cutting up and consuming mammoth and other prey.
