CVR Wynnewood, Oklahoma refinery boiler blast kills worker

HOUSTON (Reuters) - One worker was killed in a boiler explosion on Friday at CVR Energy Inc.'s 70,000 barrel per day (bpd) Wynnewood, Oklahoma, refinery, a company spokeswoman said in a statement.

Another refinery employee was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, according to Garvin County Sheriff Larry Rhodes.

There was no fire following the blast, which occurred at about 6:20 p.m. local time (1120 GMT) because the refinery was shut down for a 40-day overhaul, Rhodes said.

"There was no threat to Wynnewood or the surrounding communities," Rhodes said.

Neither the company nor Rhodes gave details about the injuries employees sustained in the blast.

Boilers are required at a refinery to generate steam for electrical power production, and for use in the crude oil refining process.

"All other employees are accounted for at this time," said CVR spokeswoman Angie Dasbach. "Company officials are assessing the situation and will provide updates as information becomes available."

CVR acquired the Wynnewood refinery when it purchased Gary-Williams Energy Corp for $525 million in December.

Wynnewood is located 67 miles south of the state capital of Oklahoma City.

Iterations: We Know About B2B And B2C, But Don?t Overlook B2D

LegoConsumer and enterprise. Software and hardware. Infrastructure operations and user experience. Products and services. No matter the focus, innovation in technology, and especially around Silicon Valley, has ebbed and flowed across these areas. Some new companies focus on building solutions for the enterprise, and perhaps nowadays its too easy to take the consumer route. The purpose of this week?s column is to shed a bit of light on a growing class of new startups that are not selling directly to big companies or individuals generally, but focusing on software and infrastructure developers specifically. Selling into enterprise -- going B2B -- has been an attractive route for myriad reasons. There are barriers to entry in technological development, it takes real venture investment and time to build these products, and established sales channels and newer marketing avenues make the pursuit of these markets tantalizing. With the enterprise comes a promise of scale, size, and predictability, often in the form of pay-per-seat pricing models, built-in distribution, and lock-in.

Workplace Shooting Leaves 5 Dead In Minnesota - Careers Articles

minneapolis worker kills 4

A gunman opened fire inside a Minneapolis sign company on Thursday, killing five people including himself and wounding four others, police said.

Minneapolis Police spokesman Steve McCarty said five people were dead at Accent Signage Systems, including the gunman. Three others were in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis and a forth had non-life threatening injuries, he said.

He declined to identify those killed or wounded, and said he did not know what connection the shooter may have had with the business, if any. A neighbor, Heather Buckingham, who identified herself as a former receptionist at Accent Signage, told local station KARE-TV that the suspected gunman had been laid off by the company Thursday.

A representative from Accent Signage Systems could not be reached for comment. A July article in a local business publication said the company had 28 employees.

Police cordoned off the area around the company and held residents back.

The company is located on a tree-lined residential street. "It's the only industrial business right in the middle of a residential neighborhood," Minneapolis Mayor R. T. Rybak said in a telephone interview with Reuters. "In a great neighborhood and a great business, we have a horrible tragedy."

Rybak said he could not remember anything similar ever happening in Minneapolis.

Gov. Mark Dayton said in a statement: "I deplore this senseless violence. There is no place for it anywhere in Minnesota. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the innocent people killed or wounded."

The Minneapolis shooting comes a month after a work-related shooting near the Empire State Building in New York, which killed two people and wounded nine.

This followed an July mass shooting in a crowded cinema in Colorado and an attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in August, which rekindled debate about gun control in the United States.

Paintings stolen from bond fund manager's California home found

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Police recovered a multimillion-dollar collection of paintings stolen from the Southern California home of superstar bond fund manager Jeffrey Gundlach, and two men are in jail on suspicion of possessing the stolen property, authorities said on Thursday.

The 13 paintings, which included works by Jasper Johns and Piet Mondrian, were taken from Gundlach's home in the coastal city of Santa Monica between September 12 and September 14, officials with the city's police department said.

Gundlach, who was in New York at the time, put forward a $1.7 million reward earlier this week for the recovery of all his stolen art, increasing his previous offer of $200,000.

Officers arrested Jeffrey Nieto, 45, at Al & Ed's Autosound in the Los Angeles suburb of Pasadena on Wednesday in connection with the theft, and recovered most of the paintings at that business, where Nieto is the manager, police said.

They took the second man, Wilmer Cadiz, 40, into custody at his home in nearby San Gabriel and found another four paintings there, police said. The last painting was recovered at a home in the Los Angeles bedroom community of Glendale. The person who had that painting has been interviewed and is cooperating with investigators, police said.

Police are still investigating the case, including whether Nieto and Cadiz committed the actual burglary at Gundlach's home, Santa Monica police spokesman Sergeant Richard Lewis said.

It was not immediately clear if Nieto or Cadiz have attorneys to represent them.

Gundlach, who is chief executive officer and chief investment officer of DoubleLine Capital, in a statement thanked the Santa Monica Police Department for "apprehending the criminals" and recovering "all of the artwork stolen."

"This is a great day for the art world and all those who seek order and justice in our society," Gundlach said. A representative for Gundlach did not immediately respond to an email about payment of the reward in the case.

The stolen art pieces included works by Frank Stella, Guy Rose, Hanson Duvall Puthuff and other artists.

The painting by Jasper Johns, who last year received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, is his 1956 "Green Target." The piece by the late Dutch artist Piet Mondrian is his 1936 "Composition (A) En Rouge Et Blanc."

The Mondrian piece alone is worth between $10 million and $15 million, Lewis said. The total value of the stolen paintings could be up to $39 million, but police initially valued all the items stolen from Gundlach's home at $10 million to be conservative about the price tag, Lewis said.

Police have not recovered a Porsche Carrera 4S sports car taken from Gundlach's home, nor have they found several luxury watches, a handgun and some wine that was also stolen, Lewis said. The car originally sold for $120,000 and the wine was worth $100,000, he said.

Nieto was being held in jail on bail of $500,000 and Cadiz was being held on $20,000, according to Los Angeles County inmate records.

Potential voter registration fraud in Florida: GOP?s own 'ACORN' scandal?

The Republican Party fired a voter registration contractor this week after the firm turned in illegible, incorrect, and falsified voter registration forms to Florida election officials.

The Republican Party promptly fired a voter registration contractor this week after the firm, Strategic Allied Consulting, turned in illegible, incorrect, and falsified voter registration forms to Florida election officials.

Saying the party has ?zero tolerance? for voter fraud, the GOP also filed complaints against the company with the Florida Secretary of State?s office. The company, run by long-time GOP operative Nathan Sproul, says a single employee was responsible for the forged signatures, though the problem, by Friday, had spread to 10 counties.

"This is an issue we take extremely seriously," RNC spokesman Sean Spicer told CBS News. "When allegations were brought to our attention we severed all ties to the firm."

While reasonable, those explanations could have trouble finding traction among the US electorate, which has watched battles erupt in mostly swing states from Florida to Ohio over control of voter rolls, and heated debates about potential disenfranchisement of key Democratic constituencies, poorer, minority, and elderly voters.

Why do Election 2012 swing states matter? 5 resources to explain.

The allegations are particularly poignant in Florida, which decided the presidential race in 2000 after a massive recount was halted by the US Supreme Court in a way that gave the election to the GOP, and where the current Republican state administration has fought with the US Department of Justice over an effort to weed out illegal immigrants from the state?s voter rolls.

Even more to the point of third-party voter registration contractors, the League of Women Voters sued Florida earlier this month after it instituted a new 48-hour deadline for turning in registration forms. The state relented, reinstating a 10-day deadline.

What?s more, the fraudulent registration findings have echoes of the 2008 controversies over the now-disbanded ACORN community activism group, which was accused by Republicans in 2008 of falsifying forms.

Brad Friedman, who runs the electoral watchdog Brad Blog, helped break the story, tying it to other emerging GOP registration controversies in California and Colorado. Other states where Sproul?s firm had been hired to gather registrations have not reported any problems.

?A massive GOP voter registration scheme, which appears to involve the upper-echelons of the national party, [has begun] to emerge,? Mr. Friedman writes.

Multiple similarities discovered between cancer cells and induced pluripotent stem cells

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? UC Davis investigators have found new evidence that a promising type of stem cell now being considered for a variety of disease therapies is very similar to the type of cells that give rise to cancer. The findings suggest that although the cells -- known as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) -- show substantial promise as a source of replacement cells and tissues to treat injuries, disease and chronic conditions, scientists and physicians must move cautiously with any clinical use because iPSCs could also cause malignant cancer.

The article, "Induced pluripotency and oncogenic transformation are related processes," is now online in the journal, Stem Cells and Development.

"This is the first study that describes the specific molecular pathways that iPSCs and cancer cells share from a direct comparison" said Paul Knoepfler, associate professor of cell biology and human anatomy, and principal investigator of the study. "It means that much more study is required before iPSCs can be used clinically. However, our study adds to a growing knowledge base that not only will help make stem cell therapies safer, but also provide us with new understandings about the cancer-causing process and more effective ways to fight the disease."

Since 2007, cell biologists have been able to induce specialized, differentiated cells (such as those obtained from the skin or muscle of a human adult) to become iPSCs. Like embryonic stem cells, iPSCs are a type of stem cell that is able to become any cell type. This "pluripotent" capability means that iPSCs have the potential of being used in treatments for a variety of human diseases, a fundamentally new type of clinical care known as regenerative medicine.

iPSCs are considered particularly important because their production avoids the controversy that surrounds embryonic stem cells. In addition, iPSCs can be taken from a patient's own skin and induced to produce other needed tissues, thereby evading the possibility of immunologic rejection that arises when transplanting cells from a donor to a recipient. In contrast to therapies based on ES cells, iPSCs would eliminate the need for patients to take immunosuppressive drugs.

Earlier research indicated that both ES cells and iPSCs pose some health risks. Increasing evidence suggests that pluripotency may be related to rapid cellular growth, a characteristic of cancer. iPSCs, as well as embryonic stem cells, are well known by scientists to have the propensity to cause teratomas, an unusual type of benign tumor that consists of many different cell types. The new UC Davis study demonstrates for the first time that iPSCs -- as well as ES cells -- share significant similarities to malignant cancer cells.

The investigators compared iPSCs to a form of malignant cancer known as oncogenic foci that are also produced in laboratories; these cell types are used by medical researchers to create models of cancer, particularly sarcoma. Specifically, the scientists contrasted the different cells' transcriptomes, composed of the RNA molecules or "transcripts." Unlike DNA analysis, which reflects a cell's entire genetic code whether or not the genes are active, transcriptomes reflect only the genes that are actively expressed at a given time and therefore provide a picture of actual cellular activity.

From this transcriptome analysis, the investigators found that the iPSCs and malignant sarcoma cancer cells are unexpectedly similar in several respects. Genes that were not expressed in iPSCs were also not expressed in the cancer-generating cells, including many that have properties that guide a cell to normally differentiate in certain directions. Both cell types also exhibited evidence of similar metabolic activities, another indication that they are related cell types.

"We were surprised how similar iPSCS were to cancer-generating cells," said Knoepfler. "Our findings indicate that the search for therapeutic applications of iPSCs must proceed with considerable caution if we are to do our best to promote patient safety."

Knoepfler noted, for example, that future experimental therapies using iPSCs for human transplants would most often not involve implanting iPSCs directly into a patient. Instead, iPSCs would be used to create differentiated cells -- or tissues -- in the laboratory, which could then be transplanted into a patient. This approach avoids implanting the actual undifferentiated iPSCS, and reduces the risk of tumor development as a side effect. However, Knoepfler noted that even trace amounts of residual iPSCs could cause cancer in patients, a possibility supported by his team's latest research.

Encouragingly, the UC Davis team also found important differences between the cell types that could provide clues to making iPSCs safer. As part of this study, the researchers transformed tumor-generating cell types into iPS-like cells by manipulating their genetic make up. Although the reprogrammed cancer cells did not behave identically to iPSCs, and had reduced ability to produce different cell types, the findings are exciting because they suggest that cancer cells can be reprogrammed into more normal cell types, possibly opening the door to new cancer therapies.

"We found that we could reprogram the cancer cells to behave more akin to normal stem cells," said Knoepfler. "This suggests that such cancer cell reprogramming could become a new way of treating cancer patients, in essence telling their tumors to turn into normal stem cells."

Knoepfler said the team is continuing to study the differences and similarities between iPSCs and cancer cells, as well as investigate possible ways to make iPSCs safer. It appears that targeting specific metabolic pathways may enhance iPSC formation, while modulating other pathways may improve safety.

Other study authors are John Riggs, Bonnie Barrilleaux, Natalia Varlakhanova, Kelly Bush and Vanessa Chan, all of the UC Davis Department of Cell Biology and Human Anatomy.

The study was funded by grants from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and from the National Institutes of Health (NIH grant 5R01GM100782-01).

5 Simple Things You Can Do For Breast Cancer Awareness Month ...

Photo: maf04/Creative Commons

October (which is just a few days away) is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Those of you who follow me already know my story; my mother and father both had breast cancer and I had a preventive mastectomy due to my own breast disease. While that's a sobering story, remarkable strides have been made in the fight. Breast cancer remains one of the most treatable forms of cancer with a very good rate of survival, if?it's caught early. That means being educated and proactive.

So here are five things totally within your power to do during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

1.? Start doing breast self-exams. You can go here for information on how to do your self exams.? Put them on your calendar so that you remember to do them once a month. Sometimes it's confusing and you might not be sure exactly what you are feeling for. If you need help, see your doctor.

2. Know when to get mammogram.? The National Cancer Institute recommends having a baseline mammogram at age 40 but if you have a family history of breast cancer, you may need to begin routine screening earlier. Again, talk to your doctor.

3. Know your family history. No one in your family has had breast cancer? Whew, so you're off the hook? Not so fast. The number one?risk factor for developing the disease is being a woman who is getting older. Yep, that's. it. Your risk increases if you have a family history but not having one does not make you immune.?

4. Talk to your teen. The last time I took my teen daughter to the pediatrician, she reminded me that I need to talk to Casey about breast cancer. You'd think I'd know that, given my own story, but even I needed to be reminded. Everyone needs to know what their breasts normally feel like, and discuss with their doctor anything they're unsure of.

5. Get involved. Spread the word about breast cancer. Take to Twitter, Facebook, or other social media and, at the very least, make sure your friends are aware that their chances of being diagnosed are 1 in 8. Encourage friends to check their family history, run, or take some other step toward your own good health!

Breast cancer does not mean a death sentence. Remember, early detection saves lives.

Iran will stop at nothing to protect Syria: Clinton

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Iran has left no doubt that it will do whatever it takes to protect the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Tehran's staunch ally, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday.

Clinton also said the United States was offering the Syrian opposition an additional $45 million in non-lethal and humanitarian aid - $30 million for humanitarian assistance and $15 million for non-lethal help, such as radios and training.

"Let's be very frank here - the regime's most important lifeline is Iran. Last week a senior Iranian official publicly acknowledged that members of the Iranian (Islamic) Revolutionary Guard Corps are operating inside Syria," she told a group of foreign ministers at a meeting in New York.

"There is no longer any doubt that Tehran will do whatever it takes to protect its proxy and crony in Damascus," Clinton said. "Iran will do everything it can to evade international sanctions."

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said in remarks prepared for delivery at the same meeting of the so-called Friends of Syria - an informal group of countries supporting Assad's ouster - that Paris was increasing its contacts with Syria's armed rebels.

"The process is complex but the Syrian people have been waiting for 18 months for the opposition to succeed to move forward," Fabius said. "It is within this perspective that France has increased its contacts with representatives of the armed opposition."

The 18-month-old uprising against Assad has descended into a civil war and opposition activists estimate more than 30,000 people have been killed.

Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby told the group the situation in Syria was becoming "more explosive."

"We need to start a transitional period," he said. "A transitional period means a change to another regime."

The "Friends of Syria" include the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The group convenes periodically to discuss Syria outside the U.N. Security Council and met on Friday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly's annual gathering of world leaders.

93% Side by Side

For film tech nerds the world over, this documentary about the advent of digital filmmaking and what it means for the old school film purists is an engaging must-see. Keanu Reeves narrates and interviews an impressive roster of directors, cinematographers, editors, actors, and execs through this highly technical history and many of the subjects are truly game. I think their candidness is largely due to Reeves being there. Most seem to feel really comfortable around him, which is essential to getting some of the gold that comes out of the likes of Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher in particular. Editor Anne Coates, the 86-year-old editor of such classics as LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) and OUT OF SIGHT (1998) brings a refreshing and surprising perspective. Just when you expect the film vs. digital argument to have lines drawn depending on age, Ms. Coates shows a delightful openness to the new technology. This is an astounding time capsule piece which demonstrates how truly far we've come in digital image quality, particularly just in the past few years. There are times where you'll go back and forth about how you feel, because ultimately, both sides make great points. I couldn't believe how terrible some of the earlier digital films looked (TADPOLE or CHUCK AND BUCK anyone?). This may feel really too inside baseball for the layperson, but if you have any interest in how we experience filmed stories, this is essential viewing.

?How do you celebrate an achievement with your partner?

Cupid?s Advice:

Your admiration means everything to your partner. Even if it doesn?t seem that way, remember that we all want to impress our significant other. It?s why boys get into so many fights. Do these things to show how your romance?s achievements impress you:

1. Make it a special event: Your partner won?t always think to celebrate their own successes with you. By suggesting a special meal, a vacation, or just getting drinks and talking about their achievement, it shows that it matters to you.

2. Build their confidence: Compliment their talents and skills. Find specific details to admire in their success. Ask them about their future plans and goals. Encourage them to speak with ambition and determination about their next step.

3. Admire their effort: Don?t focus your flattery solely on their accomplishment. Make sure most of your admiration is on the effort or process that led up to it. By complimenting their labour, you encourage them to keep trying. And maybe next time if they don?t meet success, you can still compliment their hard work.

Weight Loss Before and After Pictures - What's It For Curvy Goddess ...

Weight loss before and after comparisons and results can give you the motivation and inspiration to continue on your Curvy Goddess fitness and health journey. It is really difficult sometimes at certain points on the path to stay on and move forward so what you need to do is create the inspiration to plow through.

Weight loss before and after images may just do the trick. I always make sure that I have a before image available so when I am ready to take the after pic to create my weight loss before and after pic it?s there for me.

For some, being able to see weight loss before and after images of others will help keep them going. Seeing weight loss before and after images of others brings forth the message that they have been where I am and look at them now.

For many, it gives them hope. Feeling hopeful and having faith are two very powerful elements for a strong mindset. You do need that to help you succeed and create the kind of fitness and health that you desire, Curvy Goddess.

I think that weight loss before and after images are valid motivational tools along the Curvy Goddess? fitness and health journey. Other motivational tools of measures of progress can possibly be circumference measurements and seeing how your clothes fit you. I would check and measure every 4 weeks.

I would not rely on these measures of progress on a daily or even weekly basis because they can easily become a crutch on your fitness and health journey.

My hope and goal for you Curvy Goddess is to help you cross the bridge from neurotic, worrisome, uncomfortable, intense and fast weight loss to healthy weight loss and lifetime health and fitness. I want you to exercise consistently and often because it?s fun, and it makes you feel great!

There are so many health benefits that you?ll receive from working out that a weight loss before and after pic just doesn?t show.

*Strengthens heart
*Increases muscle mass and halts muscle wasting
*Lubricates the joints
*Increases flexibility
*Combats depression
*Burns fat

Again these are just a few benefits from exercise. And so when I listen to someone who exercises because she just wants to lose weight then I feel I need to set her straight. That goal of just wanting to lose weight makes me believe that she?s just started on this journey and she has not been on the journey long enough to understand what fitness and health can truly give to her.

She hasn?t developed the mindset and attitude that ?I am here to stay no matter what size I am. I am going to see it through even if I?m not the size I want to be because I know that exercise and eating right will give me so much more down this path that I?ve chosen for myself.?

Here is one of my Curvy Goddess client?s weight loss before and after pictures that I am so proud of who has shifted from fast and extreme weight loss mindset to a fit and healthy lifestyle attitude!

Sandra's Before and After

I call her my Curvy Goddess Warrior Princess. In her before and after weight loss image it doesn?t give you details of Sandra?s challenges. She has gone off course and got back on many times. She has been frustrated and defiant but she never quits. And for sure she has learned so much from all of her falling off the wagon. I know that she will reach her ultimate goal. Her courage transcends her fears and for that I dub her The Curvy Goddess Warrior Princess!

Weight Loss Before and After of The Curvy Goddess

Curvy Goddess Before and After

It has taken me so long to get to where I am now and the end of my journey is when I leave this Earth because the before and after weight loss image is just a snapshot in time ? not truly the end of the road. I finally understand that my level of knowledge, understanding, love, and appreciation for my body gets deeper as I progress along my path. The desire for goals of ?weight loss in 7 days? or ?lose 10 pounds before my class reunion? are trivial. I am proud of where I stand.

I also wanted to show you two examples of weight loss before and after results.

The first are pics of Snooki weight loss before and after results.

My first impression from Snooki weight loss before and after is that her reasons are all about weight loss and vanity but that is based on projection of her celebrity personality. What do you think?

The next is Adele weight loss before and after results. I absolutely LOVE Adele! And her before pics are adorable to me! What do you think?

Hope you enjoyed the weight loss before and after results article. Until next time Curvy Goddess, Stay Strong and Stunning!

Curiosity Rover Being Upgraded With Autonomous Sensor Program

DevotedSkeptic writes "Curiosity will be getting a software upgrade called Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science (AEGIS) which will allow it to take on the go photos to save precious time while exploring our red neighbor. Another interesting feature AGEIS may be able to provide is the ability for Curiosity to call home when it sees something interesting. It won't be a quick upgrade, AEGIS, which has been used on the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity since 2009, will be installed on Curiosity in the next nine to 12 months, Estlin said in an interview with InformationWeek. The AEGIS software, developed by JPL, was named NASA's 'software of the year' in 2011. Opportunity uses the software to take a wide-angle image with a low-resolution camera, then picks out rocks in the image to see if there's something of interest. If so, it takes a high-resolution image using an on-board science camera that's capable of zooming in on the subject. The software has potential beyond picture taking. Its see-and-react code could be adapted to other instruments." There's a paper on the software as used in the Opportunity rover.

Hubble reveals XDF, the deepest view of the universe ever captured

That picture above is the deepest and most detailed view of the universe ever captured. It's called XDF, or eXtreme Deep Field, and was created using Hubble Telescope data from 2003 and 2004. It combines ten years of NASA Hubble Space photographs of a single sky sample into one full-color historic view of the galaxies. Hubble pointed at this patch of the constellation Fornax for fifty days, with an exposure time of 2 million seconds. A dazzling trip back in time, the image reveals almost 5,500 galaxies that include Andromeda, spirals similar to the Milky Way, along with remnants of galactic collisions. According to NASA, the XDF reveals galaxies that go as far back as 13.2 billion years.

There's a video after the break describing how the shot was assembled; those interested in learning even more can participate in a Google+ webinar with the XDF team this Thursday, September 27th. Here's hoping that when NASA finally gets the James Webb Space Telescope going, we'll have an even deeper view into our galactic past.

With superior ground operations, Obama widens lead in Ohio

Romney campaigning in Ohio on Wednesday (Alex Wong/Getty Images)

BEDFORD HEIGHTS, Ohio? For Mitt Romney's campaign, the location was nothing more than a friendly business that had agreed to host a rally to promote the candidate's policies toward small businesses and manufacturing.

But it was hard not to view Romney's midday appearance at American Spring Wire, a company that makes wire that bounces back into place, as a possible metaphor for the candidate's electoral hopes in this crucial swing state.

"It goes right back to where it started," Romney told a crowd of several hundred people here, explaining how spring wire works.

He's hoping the same can be said of his race in this state. The Republican candidate's impromptu tutorial came as a series of new polls found that after months of a close race here between President Barack Obama and Romney, the GOP's chances in Ohio appear to be slipping away.

A New York Times/CBS News/Quinnipiac poll released on Wednesday found Obama leading Romney among likely Ohio voters by 10 points, 53 percent to 43 percent. It came on the heels of a Washington Post poll released on Tuesday that found Obama besting Romney by 8 points in the state.

They were the third and fourth polls in a row to find Obama expanding his lead in the Buckeye State?a move that prompted ABC News to change its projection of Ohio being a "toss up" state in November to one that "leans Obama."

As Romney spoke, Obama was campaigning on the other side of the state, holding his own rally at Bowling Green State University. There, the president lit into his Republican opponent, accusing Romney of wanting to gut education by giving wealthy Americans a tax cut. He also seized upon Romney's suggestion captured in a secretly filmed video at a fundraiser that 47 percent of Americans view themselves as "victims" and are too dependent on the government.

"I don't believe we can get very far with leaders who write off half the nation as victims," Obama said.

The dueling visits by Obama and Romney offered a hint at what has been one of the GOP candidate's major problems in Ohio: He's been largely outmaneuvered by his Democratic opponent, who has lavished money and attention on Ohio since he took office.

Wednesday marked Obama's 13th visit to the state so far this year?and his 29th since taking office, according to his campaign. That does not include an appearance Obama made in the state just days before he was officially inaugurated in January 2009?a visit many at the time said was the unofficial kickoff to his 2012 campaign.

Obama has significantly outspent Romney when it comes to television advertising in the state: Obama dropped $41 million since May compared with just $21 million by Romney, says National Journal. Outside Republican groups have made up some of that ground?chipping in about $20 million in ads in the state, according to National Journal?but the Obama campaign has spent tens of millions more building up its staff and ground operation in Ohio. And the effort appears to be having an impact on the polls, especially on the issue of the economy.

In Ohio, a state that has been hard-hit by the loss of manufacturing jobs, the Romney team believed it would benefit from voter angst over the economy. But while the NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac poll found the economy is still the top issue for Ohio voters, Obama now holds a 6-point advantage over Romney when it comes to who voters believe would do a "better job." When presented with the same question in polls during July and August, the candidates were tied.

Romney still has an advantage on the economy among Ohio independents: According to the NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac poll, 51 percent of independent voters think he would best handle the economy, compared with 45 percent for Obama.

But Romney is being hurt by his drop in support among women voters, who overwhelmingly prefer Obama on the issue of the economy?59 percent to Romney's 37 percent. Overall, female voters in Ohio prefer Obama in the race, 60 percent to Romney's 35 percent.

The Romney team has worked to make up its deficit among female voters in Ohio and other battlegrounds, appealing to them through television ads on issues like the growing federal deficit?one of the few areas where Romney continues to have an advantage over Obama.

Nevertheless, Romney aides have refuted any suggestions the candidate is in real trouble in this state. The Romney campaign has downplayed public polls, insisting its internal numbers show the race much closer?though it declined to offer specifics.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Rich Beeson, Romney's political director, said the race in Ohio is still "inside the margin of error" and accused the Obama campaign of "spiking the ball at the 30-yard line." But he declined to say whether there is a path to victory for Romney if he can't win Ohio.

"The public polls are what the public polls are," Beeson said. "I kind of hope the Obama campaign is basing their campaign on what the public polls say. We don't. We have confidence in our data and our metrics."

In response, Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki trotted out her own sports metaphor, so to speak, likening the campaign to a horse race.

"We don't get too whipped up when we're up, or too whipped up when we're down. And we're running this race in every single swing state like we're five points down. If we need to pass out horse blinders to all of our staff, we will do that," Psaki told reporters traveling with the president.

But, she added, "As time progresses, the field is looking like it's narrowing for them. And so, in that sense, we'd rather be us than them, because we want a field?or a path, I should say?where you can drive a Mack truck through it, not one where you can drive a little scooter through it."

'The Casual Vacancy': Adult content shows we're not at Hogwarts anymore

J.K. Rowling's new book for adults is highly anticipated, and adult content in the books shows it's no Potter do-over, though similar themes echo in 'Vacancy.'

By Husna Haq / September 24, 2012

J.K. Rowling's new book 'The Casual Vacancy,' to be released Sept. 27, reflects on the two topics that she says are her obsessions: morality and mortality.

If, as F. Scott Fitzgerald once proclaimed, ?There are no second acts in American lives,? J.K. Rowling is proving there are in British ones.

And third and fourth, it seems. The once-single mother who survived on welfare, then struck platinum-status with her seven-book series on the magical world of Harry Potter has reinvented herself again, this time as a novelist for an entirely new audience ? adults.?

Rowling?s post-Harry era begins Sept. 27 with the release of ?The Casual Vacancy.? The new novel is a 512-page tale of class warfare, morality, and small town politics set in an idyllic fictional English village.

The question on everyone?s mind: Whether Rowling can successfully crossover from her stratospherically triumphant reign as a children?s author and creator of the 450-million-selling Potter books, which made her net worth almost $900 million and set the bar for forthcoming books frighteningly high, to well-received adult novelist.

This much is clear: ?The Casual Vacancy? is no ?Harry Potter? and Rowling, thankfully, makes no apologies for this decidedly different track. Set in the fictional English village of Pagford, the book begins as a ?rural comedy of manners? that builds into a portrayal of class warfare, strewn throughout with treatises on social welfare. Following the death of Pagford council member Barry Fairbrother, the well-heeled town is pitched into a divisive battle about its connection to Fields, a neighboring town characterized by its public housing and poverty. Historically, Pagford extended a hand to Fields ? children from Fields could attend primary school in Pagford (?a place of flower baskets and other middle-class comforts) and the town also ran a drug-treatment clinic that served many in Fields. But with the death of council member Fairbrother, Pagford?s ?anti-Fields faction sees an opportunity to rid Pagford of this burden.?

After reading the 512-page novel and interviewing the famously reserved Rowling, writer Ian Parker shared his thoughts in a 10,000-word feature in the New Yorker.?

?Within a few pages, it was clear that the novel had not been written for children,? Parker writes. ?The Casual Vacancy,? after all, is a tale of ?class warfare set amid semi-rural poverty, heroin addiction, and teenage perplexity and sexuality.?

??But reviewers looking for echoes of the Harry Potter series will find them. ?The Causal Vacancy? describes young people coming of age in a place divided by warring factions, and the deceased council member, Barry Fairbrother ? who dies in the first chapter but remains the story?s moral center ? had the same virtues, in his world, that Harry had in his ? tolerance, constancy, a willingness to act.?

Even Rowling found similar themes. ?I think there?is?a through-line,? the author told Parker of the New Yorker. ?Mortality, morality, the two things that I obsess about.?

But, by most accounts, the similarities end there. For those accustomed to Rowling?s more traditional, buttoned-up children?s fare, ?The Casual Vacancy? is most certainly not that.

There?s this: ?The leathery skin of her upper cleavage radiated little cracks that no longer vanished when decompressed.? And this, about a lustful little boy who sits on a school bus ?with an ache in his heart and in his balls.?

Apple says more than 5 million iPhone 5s sold

NEW YORK (AP) ? Apple Inc. said Monday that it has sold more than 5 million units of the new iPhone 5 in the three days since its launch, less than analysts had expected.

Apple shares were down $15.31, or 2.2 percent, at $684.79 in premarket trading.

The iPhone 5, the most eagerly awaited phone of the year, went on sale Friday in the U.S., Germany, France, Japan and five other countries.

When it launched the iPhone 4S a year ago, Apple sold 4 million in the first three days.

Apple could have sold more iPhones if it had more available: demand exceeded supply for most models. Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White said the phone was sold out at 80 to 85 percent of the U.S. Apple stores he and his team contacted Sunday evening, and the ones that were still available were mostly Sprint models.

Online delivery times have stretched to three to four weeks.

White had expected Apple to sell 6 to 6.5 million iPhone 5 units in the first three days.

The phone will go on sale in 22 more countries this Friday and in more than 100 countries by the end of the year.
