Former NBA All-Star Jamal Mashburn has flagged a desire to put together a group to purchase the New Orleans Hornets from the NBA.

In an interview with the China Daily during a recent basketball tournament in Beijing, Mashburn said he would like to use the skills he has learned during his successful post-basketball business career to turn around the fortunes of the struggling Hornets franchise.

The 39-year-old averaged 19.1 points per game during his 12-year career, which included a four-year stint with the Hornets ? where he earned his All-Star appearance in 2003.

"I learned a lot from playing basketball, such as how to be disciplined, how to motivate others and how to be a leader. The way you play translates into business," Mashburn told the Daily. "Just having money as an ex-pro doesn't mean you are a great businessman. You have to start from the ground floor.

"I can be an asset to a team as an owner, not only for my ability to scout talent, but also understand the business side of things. The first All-Star of the Hornets comes back to buy the team; it's going to be a great story."

Mashburn, however, is going to have to overcome a minor court dispute before he attempts to buy the team from the NBA ? which purchased the franchise after minority owner Gary Chouest and owner George Shinn failed to reach an agreement in late 2010.

Mashburn is being sued for at least $15,000 after being accused of causing a car accident in Florida last February, TMZ reported Sunday.

One of the victims said in the lawsuit that she was disfigured in the accident, but TMZ reported that Mashburn has fought back by lodging court documents that claim the driver of the other car was using a cell phone at the time of the crash and that both passengers were not wearing seatbelts.
