Can going out with your friends be good for your health? Yes it can.
There is significant research that says having strong social relationships can improve your health. People who have strong social relationships generally have more positive mental health, emotional health and physical health. There has even been a study which reported men who have multiple friendships demonstrated a lessened chance of a cardiovascular event.
For women strong social relationships allow them to vent their frustrations, share stories and concerns, and problem solve other areas of their lives such as parenting skills. Women tend to be supportive in challenging times. For example, when an illness such as cancer occurs, women are likely to seek out friendships with other women whove experienced the same thing. Women who have friendships at this time have shown higher survival rates.
Health benefits can occur in family relationships as well as personal ones. The most health benefits occur in women who have multiple social relationships. Having few or limited relationships can increase the chances of isolation and depression.
In men some studies have produced strong evidence that those who have multiple friendships are less likely to suffer from heart disease. It has long been reported that men who are married live longer and have better overall health. However, it should be mentioned that the long-term benefits of marriage for women have been found to be mixed.
While the evidence is mounting that having positive, multiple social relationships can have positive health benefits, it has also been shown that negative relationships can add stress and produce harmful health effects. Difficult work relationships have been shown to increase sick days. People who have multiple friendships tend to have fewer colds, but the opposite is also true. In women, if they have friends who are overweight, then they tend to be overweight themselves. People who have negativity in their marriage or close friendship were found to be 25% more likely to have heart problems.
So what is our moral? Go out and spend time with your friends and loved ones. Develop these relationships. It doesnt really matter where they come from family, church, social groups, they all count.
Relieve stress by sharing stories, problem solving and just being there to listen, but be careful of negative relationships and influences. Look around at your relationships and try to take advantage of those which promote positivity in your life.
Laughter has numerous health benefits. Get out of the house and spend some time laughing and enjoying others company, youll be doing yourself and your heart a favor.
