Calling and Texting

One of the downfalls in the current wireless is that during emergencies the networks can become overloaded making it impossible to get through calling and texting on traditional communications platforms. This weakness was made evident in recent events such as the earthquake in the U.S. which while centered in Virginia, was felt substantially in places like Washington, D.C. and New York City. The shock of this rare occurrence had people panicking to reach loved ones to make sure they were safe and this sudden barrage of calls simply overloaded the systems. The same thing happened during Hurricane Irene on the East Coast in early September.

An interesting and exciting benefit of WiFi and VOIP was discovered during these events as people were able to access calling and texting via mobile VOIP applications such as those offered from Smart Mouth Mobile as long as they could get WIfI access. Obviously, if you are unable to access WiFi then you would be unable to benefit but for an upgrade of only $19.95 USD to be able to call any landline or mobile anywhere in the world for only a penny per minute it is well worth the peace of mind just to have the option available to you.

One of the subscribers to the Smart Mobile service reported that the Smart Mobile app on her iPod Touch was the only way she could utilize calling and texting while she was in New York during the recent earthquake. Again, there is no guarantee that the system will work during an emergency situation but I think you would have to agree with me that it is well worth twenty bucks to have the option.

Since this is a relatively new discovery there will have to be much testing done to see how reliable VOIP services may truly be during an emergency situation but with over three more months of hurricane season in the Atlantic basin as well as the threat of earthquakes in numerous locations there should be no shortage of testing sites.

This article was written to share the discovery of this exciting emergency communications alternative, it is not a guarantee of any kind that such a service will positively work but the possibility of having access to an alternate communications option during events that cause traditional networks to go down could be a lifesaver for some. In addition, since Smart Mouth Mobile provides the $19.95 subscription upgrade free to law enforcement and emergency responders it may also be an effective alternate calling and texting platform for them as well.

As a side note, Just a couple of months ago, Microsoft served notice on the rest of the world that they saw the value in VOIP communications when they purchased Skype for nearly nine billion dollars. It is obvious that Gates and company see the value in a mobile future; the outgoing head of the Windows Phone project called it the best product Microsoft has ever developed. With the purchase of Skype it is quite obvious that Microsoft has more than just a passing interest in mobile communications and international calling apps are the future.

Facebook just recently released their Facebook Mobile product and while they haven't been connected to any major purchases of mobile communications software or device manufacturers, one should still keep a watchful eye on a company that has a rebellious twenty-something as a CEO. Even Zuckerberg knows that people want to communicate with each other all over the planet, the new Facebook mobile is similar to having an international calling app on your mobile.

Google just announced their biggest purchase ever, picking up Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion and leaving no doubt in anyone's mind that the internet and wall street behemoth has its sights set on the mobile industry and pushing its Android brand of mobile devices and applications. While tech insiders seem to be connecting the dots, the stock market reacted unfavorably with financial analysts downgrading Google stock to 'sell' status.

Google's purchase of Motorola Mobility along with the thousands of patents that come with it, is just the latest in the 'Patent Wars', that have been going on between the big players, mainly Microsoft, Google, and Apple, with a little input from Samsung and Motorola here and there.

Apple has been aggressively going after other device makers for patent infringement violations all over the world, when coupled with the reports of the kinds of patents they are after and their interest in developing their own wireless networks it is quite obvious that Apple too has designs on the mobile communications market.
